This report discusses a series of interventions that Genesis HealthCare, one of the largest long-term care providers in the US, implemented in response to lower COVID-19 vaccination uptake among Hispanic and black Genesis staff members. The organization’s Vaccine Acceptance Steering Committee worked with their DEI Committee to develop a more comprehensive education strategy to improve vaccination acceptance among BIPOC staff that included offering vaccine information sessions at all times of the day and the night, inviting staff family members and friends to participate in these sessions, creating more multilingual educational materials, and featuring DEI Committee members in the organization’s social media campaigns. At the end of the one month intervention, statistically significant improvements in the likelihood of being vaccinated compared with white staff members increased for black and Hispanic employees.

Press Release
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has announced the establishment of the Office of Long COVID Research and Practice to address the long-term effects of COVID-19. This office will coordinate the government’s response to Long COVID, including associated conditions and the implementation of a National Research Action Plan. Over 14 federal departments and divisions are working together to reduce the impact of Long COVID and improve the quality of life for those affected. Additionally, the National Institutes of Health has launched the RECOVER Initiative, a $1.15 billion research program focused on understanding, treating, and preventing Long COVID. The initiative involves large-scale studies and clinical trials to develop interventions for the condition.

The article discusses the challenges and frustrations surrounding Long COVID research in the United States. Despite substantial investments and numerous research efforts, progress in understanding and treating Long COVID has been slow and disappointing. Experts and patient advocates have criticized the research community for its focus on disease development rather than direct patient care, duplication of studies, and a lack of clinical trials. The authors propose a new hypothesis that Long COVID may be a form of post-infectious syndrome or chronic fatigue syndrome, suggesting that traditional biomedical research approaches may not yield meaningful results. Instead, they advocate for a shift towards health services research and measures that directly impact patients’ welfare, including prevention, improved prognosis, access to empathetic care, and quality of life issues. They emphasize the need for collaboration between researchers, patients, and advocacy groups to reset the research agenda effectively.

White Paper/Brief
The article highlights the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and their influence on preparations for future public health emergencies. While the federal Public Health Emergency for COVID-19 is set to end in May 2023, the FDA emphasizes the continued importance of COVID-19 vaccines and treatments. Addressing misinformation and strengthening supply chain resilience are key priorities, and the FDA is developing more efficient inspection planning systems. Modernizing FDA authorities and maintaining a commitment to planning for the future are also emphasized to enhance national security and public health preparedness.

White Paper/Brief
Using a grant from the National Science Foundation, Predictive Intelligence for Pandemic Prevention (PIPP) developed tools and systems to respond effectively to infectious disease pandemics. Recommendations from this work include avoiding reinvention of the wheel by centralizing and standardizing approaches to pandemic response planning, collaboration and information sharing among public health stakeholders, investing in high-performance computing and data management systems for public health, creating a national center for pandemic response, developing playbooks for fast-moving threats, and identifying sustainable and scalable solutions.

Data from three rounds of a nationally representative cross-sectional monitoring survey were analyzed to characterize the mental health impacts of COVID-19 on adults living in Canada. This study uniquely highlights trends in mental health at different points in time across the most impacted population groups. The authors advocate for population-based approaches to mental health focusing on root causes and prevention alongside treatment.

This global analysis discusses how cultural tightness (defined as the strength of and adherence to social norms) impacts countries’ success in limiting cases of and deaths from COVID-19. Findings show that “tight” cultures which have strict norms and punishments for deviance had fewer cases and deaths as compared with loose cultures; authors recommend developing new interventions to help countries tighten their social norms.

This study assessed the impacts of the pandemic on health-related and economic factors of rural well-being in Western states. Findings suggest severe impacts on employment, life satisfaction, mental health, and economic outlook across all ages, ethnicity, education levels, and sex. The authors encourage readers to use these findings as a catalyst to larger interdiscplinary COVID-19 research that integrates rural considerations in decision-making.
