This report discusses a series of interventions that Genesis HealthCare, one of the largest long-term care providers in the US, implemented in response to lower COVID-19 vaccination uptake among Hispanic and black Genesis staff members. The organization’s Vaccine Acceptance Steering Committee worked with their DEI Committee to develop a more comprehensive education strategy to improve vaccination acceptance among BIPOC staff that included offering vaccine information sessions at all times of the day and the night, inviting staff family members and friends to participate in these sessions, creating more multilingual educational materials, and featuring DEI Committee members in the organization’s social media campaigns. At the end of the one month intervention, statistically significant improvements in the likelihood of being vaccinated compared with white staff members increased for black and Hispanic employees.

This article details the Project HAPPY (HIV/AIDS Prevention Project for Youth) and how it engaged Black/African-American youth through research and implementation of the project. Youth were a part of expert panel that reviewed proposed HIV/AIDS curricula. and did outreach to get youth enrolled in the program. They recruited 431 teens and enrolled 57%, with 72% of enrolled youth attending all sessions.

This article covers the efforts of Salud America!, a national Latino-focused organization that uses digital content creation to create stories, tools, and videos to increase people’s self- and collective-efficacy to engage in advocacy for healthy changes. During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization applied its digital content curation model to address how the pandemic affected the U.S. Latino population. They released a series of website blog posts, peer-modeled stories, podcast episodes, tweet chats, action tools for school leaders, action campaigns for individuals, and localized data tools for advocates to educate the Latino community about COVID-19.

This article details the work of the Asian Health Services (AHS), a Federally Qualified Health Center located in Alameda County, California. In May 2020, AHS sought to document the experiences and needs of the Asian American community they serve through a cross-sectional survey. The surveys were available in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, traditional Chinese, and Korean. Results display the diverse needs of the Asian American community, including issues with access to testing, anti-Asian discrimination, and language barriers offer several barriers to this community. This article analyzed data from the March 2020 Kaiser Family Foundation “Coronavirus Poll” to determine levels of knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions (KAPs) across different groups. The results found that race, sex, education, income, health insurance status, and political views are all associated with KAPs. Racial inequalities exist in the access to and use of existing digital platforms for knowledge dispersal, and alternative information transmission should be used to reach specific marginalized groups.

This study sought to examine perceptions of COVID-19 related to prevention, coping, and testing of African American residents in under-resourced communities in Alabama. Utilizing the PRECEDE-PROCEED model, virtual focus groups were conducted in five urban and rural Alabama communities. The focus groups asked questions about prevention and coping barriers, prevention facilitators, and testing barriers surrounding COVID-19 for these communities. The study finds that addressing downstream determinants might be key in reducing disparities for African Americans, who experience higher rates of health disparities.

This article parallels the works of the multidisciplinary academic group on children and coronavirus (MACC) in Israel with a multidisciplinary team from John Hopkins’ own efforts to create data-driven solutions to minimize health and education inequities for children throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This project produced several outputs including a series of free, web-based, school-reopening modules for school and district administrators; a 2020-2021 School Reopening Tracker based on publicly available data sources; a Teacher & School Staff Vaccination COVID-19 Dashboard; and a COVID-19 Global Education Recovery Tracker. This study examined internet access and mode of access by social class, race, and ethnicity among youth in the U.S. to gain insight on whether these vulnerable populations experienced disparities in access and health education. The study found that low-income Black and Hispanic youth are least likely to have access to internet at home, meaning web-based dissemination of health information is not reaching this population.
