In this report, the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) discusses maternal immunizations best practices, as well as gaps to implementation recommendations. One recommendation includes focusing efforts to improve financing for immunization services during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Public health and health care partners can support efforts promoting new payment and delivery models, patient-centered medical homes, and accountable care organizations. NVAC also recommends partnering with professional organizations and other maternal immunization stakeholders to develop toolkits and guidance for improving processes.

Data from the Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey (AMES) was used by CDC to assess 9th-12th grade student behaviors and experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The prevalence of poor mental health and suicidality was high across students of all sex, sexual identity, and racial and ethnic groups; however, poor mental health, persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors were less prevalent among those who felt close to persons at school and were virtually connected with others during the pandemic. The mental health of youth might be improved via strategies that improve connections with others at home, in the community, and at school.

The report’s authors – physicians and public health and policy experts – note massive disparities experienced by Black Americans. The worse outcomes, are a predictable result of structural and social realities. The predicates that caused these disparities have long been present. These are cycles we have to break. The report highlights areas for immediate focus and attention, and presents a set of expert-generated recommendations for action.

Recent national surveys of young people have shown alarming increases in the prevalence of certain mental health challenges. We know that mental health is shaped by many factors, from our genes and brain chemistry to our relationships with family and friends, neighborhood conditions, and larger social forces and policies. As we learn the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic, and start recovering and rebuilding, we have an opportunity. Everyone has a role to play in combating this mental health pandemic. Ensuring healthy children and families will take an all-of-society effort, including policy, institutional, and individual changes. This article provides guidance on planning for a COVID-19 vaccination uptake strategy given widespread misinformation and to ensure equitable access. An essential component of this strategy is countering the anti-vaccination movement that promotes hesitancy and resistance. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a tsunami of misinformation and conspiracy theories that have the potential to reduce vaccine uptake. To make matters worse, sections of the population in many countries display low trust in governments and official information about the pandemic and how the officials are tackling it. Therefore, this paper aims to assist those responsible for promoting COVID-19 vaccine uptake to digest the vast guidance and formulate an effective locally relevant plan.

This report from RAND Corporation presents the results of a nationally-representative survey of Black Americans, coupled with follow-up data collected through interviews with survey participants who expressed vaccine hesitancy. The report identifies factors contributing to mistrust and provides recommendations to improve health messaging and communication to address vaccine hesitancy in Black communities. The practice strategy this resource is focused on is reducing vaccine hesitancy.

Public engagement and effective communication through clear, transparent messaging will play a central role in building confidence in the COVID-19 vaccines. This rapid expert consultation from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine describes a variety of public engagement and communication strategies that can be implemented at the national, state, and local levels to change patterns of interaction with the public, address hesitancy about the vaccines, and build trust. The consultation identifies six strategies for engaging communities to address vaccine hesitancy and mistrust and improve vaccine uptake, and nine communication strategies to promote acceptance of COVID vaccines. The practice strategy this resource is focused on is increasing vaccine uptake.

This resources summarizes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on substance use and the experiences of people who used drugs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Highlights include: the pandemic increased the risk of overdose for people who use drugs, and in response people who use drugs reported using more harm reduction strategies. The pandemic also motivated change in wanting to quit drug use for study participants, but also highlighted the social determinants of health as barriers to sustainable recovery.
