Book Chapter
This chapter in a larger book on systems change dives into Human Impact Partners’s experiences centering racial justice and power-sharing at the heart of their work in public health. It offers guidance on developing shared understandings of oppressive structures and systems, relationship development, and centering the voices of people most impacted by systems in need of change.

Toolkit
Lead Local was a collaborative research project between Human Impact Partners and the Right to the City Alliance. The research focused on community power-building and its potential to address social inequities that drive health outcomes. This project was not specific to COVID-19, but its findings apply to disease response and resiliency. It found that community power-building must be central to decision-making processes for true transformation.

Summary Report/Recommendations
This report outlines a framework for supporting people with long COVID through increased public awareness, accommodations within the school and workplace, research, and advocacy. It emphasizes a person-centered approach to designing this framework and understanding the lived experiences of people with long COVID. As such, recommendations focus on areas identified to be of greatest importance to the community, rather than clinical researchers.

Toolkit
The Health Equity Assessment Toolkit (HEAT) is a software application that facilitates the assessment of within-country health inequalities. It was developed for use on desktop or laptop computers and mobile devices. Explore inequality, which enables users to explore the situation in one setting of interest (e.g. a country, province or district) to determine the latest situation of inequality and the change in inequalities over time. Compare inequality, which enables users to benchmark, i.e. compare the situation in one setting of interest with the situation in other settings.

Data Collection Tool
Surgo Ventures created the COVID-19 Community Vulnerability Index to leverage the power of data to understand how and why communities are vulnerable. It also created the Precision for COVID Data Explorer, a tool used to examine how vulnerable communities have been impacted by COVID-19 and how equitable the response has been.

Data Collection Tool
This dashboard provides an initial look into how to quantify the level of vulnerability within an area (as defined by ZIP code, ZCTA). Interacting with the data at this level allows local decision makers to understand the vulnerability of their populations, as well as the vulnerability of neighboring regions.

Toolkit
This toolkit is an easy-to-use, practical resource that aims to help leaders make decisions and actionable plans amid these complicated questions. The planning framework that is the crux of this toolkit takes leaders through four key steps: Reground, Prioritize, Plan, and Connect. At each step, leaders are prompted with a series of key questions to help clarify their thinking and decision-making. These resources help leaders move from making decisions in a reactive, crisis-driven way to developing intentional short- and long-term actionable plans.

Peer Review Study
Czeisler and colleagues investigated the prevalence of mental health symptoms, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation in late June 2020. To assess mental health, substance use, and suicidal ideation during the pandemic, representative panel surveys were conducted among adults aged ≥18 years across the United States during June 24-30, 2020. Just over 40% of respondents reported at least one adverse mental or behavioral health condition. The percentage of respondents who reported having seriously considered suicide in the 30 days before completing the survey (10.7%) was significantly higher among respondents aged 18-24 years (25.5%), marginalized racial/ethnic groups (Hispanic respondents [18.6%], non-Hispanic black [black] respondents [15.1%]), self-reported unpaid caregivers for adults (30.7%), and essential workers (21.7%). This research directs attention to the need for community-level intervention and prevention efforts, including health communication strategies.

Peer Review Study
Blue Shield of California’s Community Health Advocates (CHA) Program was created to support whole person-health needs by helping individuals of all socio-economic statuses navigate and access community resources, social services, and medical systems. The Health Reimagined initiative embeds Community Health Advocates within physical health practices to increase access to social services and community resources, improve health outcomes, reduce medical costs, and improve overall patient experience. Interviews and focus groups were held and found value in adding CHA’s to the care team. During the pandemic, CHAs have been important. The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have made the need for holistic, community-integrated care even more urgent.
