This study aimed to determine independent community pharmacist preparedness for COVID-19 vaccination and to identify strategies for COVID-19 vaccination implementation in Pennsylvania. Through surveys and focus groups these recommendations emerged: (1) working with community partners to support off-site mass vaccination clinics, (2) leverage partnerships with community organizations and universities to support staffing for vaccination efforts, (3) use an appointment-based immunization model, (4) use existing scheduling tools, text messaging, and automated phone calls for second-dose reminders, and (5) further training and process improvements to support vaccine documentation and transmission to the Pennsylvania Statewide Immunization Information System.

In the United States, mobile health clinics are an important method for delivering high quality care to medically underserved populations. To address declining vaccination coverage among young children in Boston during the pandemic, Mattapan Community Health Center (Mattapan) and Codman Square Health Center (Codman Square) partnered with the Kraft Center for Community Health at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers to deploy a pediatric mobile health clinic as an adjunct to their in-person clinical services.

Filipinx/a/o Americans (FilAMS), are the third-largest Asian American group in the US. They are frequently invisible in health services research and policy, and consequently, are an afterthought in resource allocation decisions. This paper highlights historical and modern practices that impinge on FilAm health. FilAms, who experience long standing health disparities, are heavily engaged in front line health care work, but also have pre-existing health conditions and are likely to live in multigenerational household, both factors that contribute to the burden of COVID-19. Mental health concerns, elevated among front-line and essential workers during the pandemic, were compounded by anti-Asian racism and violence. The authors encourage strategies such as naming neocolonial forces that devalue and neglect FilAms, and making changes to the data collection infrastructure to facilitate the allocation of appropriate resources. Recommendations: investments that prioritize community needs, equitable resource sharing, community-led efforts, and empower communities through capacity building and interdisciplinary research.

The UN warned that the pandemic would disproportionately impact Indigenous people because of underlying health inequities associated with SDOH. This paper can help with “visioning” action for response and recovery. It highlights data, in Hawaii, and 4 other western States, showing that MHPI have high rates of COVID-19. Reliable and timely data are vital (longstanding issues). The higher risk of infection among NHPI is linked to preexisting health inequities. Chronic medical conditions, linked to the SDOH, are high. The paper highlights the economic conditions of the NHPI population, and emerging behavioral health impact of COVID-19. It also mentions the resilience and cultural assets of NHPI Communities, including the values and practices of aloha (compassion), malama (caring) and lokahi (unity). Recommendations: an emergency response plan developed through engagement with NNHPI stakeholders, and a longer term recovery plan to address employment, education, the racial wealth gap, food insecurity, housing, healthcare, criminal justice, and legal issues.

Blue Shield of California’s Community Health Advocates (CHA) Program was created to support whole person-health needs by helping individuals of all socio-economic statuses navigate and access community resources, social services, and medical systems. The Health Reimagined initiative embeds Community Health Advocates within physical health practices to increase access to social services and community resources, improve health outcomes, reduce medical costs, and improve overall patient experience. Interviews and focus groups were held and found value in adding CHA’s to the care team. During the pandemic, CHAs have been important. The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have made the need for holistic, community-integrated care even more urgent.

The Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander community experienced high COVID-19 case rates by April 2020, in addition to chronic diseases and socioeconomic disparities, so NHPI networks were mobilized to address the crisis, and a COVID-19 Response, Recovery and Resilience team was created. The team consists of multiple committees that examine policy; testing, contact tracing, and isolation; communications; social supports and resources; and data and research. This article discusses the development of a cultural framework to guide culturally informed advocacy efforts to ensure an appropriate response and recovery plan for NHPI that extends beyond COVID-19 to addressing longstanding NHPI disparities.

This cross-sectional study assessed vaccine uptake in staff and residents of long-term care facilities, including assisted living and other residential care through the Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program. This program, a public-private partnership with 3 pharmacies (CVS, Managed Health Care Associates, and Walgreens), conducted on-site visits to enrolled LTCFs to provide end-to-end management of the COVID-19 vaccination process, including appropriate storage, handling, and transport of vaccines; vaccine administration; and fulfillment of reporting requirements. Findings include having on site clinics may increase vaccine uptake, particularly when transportation may be a barrier and recommendations include ensuring steady access to COVID-19 vaccine in LTCFs following the end of the Pharmacy Partnership to maintain high vaccination coverage among residents and staff.

This case study is on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccine distribution via mobile vans to residents/staff of 47,907 long-term care facilities (LTCFs) across the United States that relied on algorithms to optimize vaccine distribution. The authors developed a modeling framework for vaccine distribution to high-risk populations in a supply-constrained environment. The framework decomposed this challenge as two separate problems: an assignment problem, where they optimally mapped each LTCF to select CVS stores responsible for vaccines; and a scheduling problem, where they developed an algorithm to assign available resources efficiently. The learning and this framework may be of use to other organizations, including communities where mobile clinics can be established to efficiently distribute vaccines and other healthcare resources in a variety of scenarios.

This study describes the initial implementation phase and findings from a multi-year engagement process with community stakeholders to build a resilient, trauma-informed community in a vibrant, ethnically-diverse, and economically depressed town, Pottstown, PA. Pottstown can offer guidance about how to coordinate and scale a community-wide engagement process, drawing on principles of community psychology, population health science, and participatory team science. A central feature of this initial phase is the use of data to generate hypotheses rather than test them, as well as to collect data about these processes to provide a continuous empirical feedback loop to guide decision-making and action. The theoretical framework uses a multi-level approach that prioritizes the population through prevention, health promotion, and policy development, consistent with federal initiatives that have emphasized addressing social determinants of health to enhance public health. An important component of this approach is the creation of cross-sector community partnerships to address social determinants that affect population health.

This survey study of health care workers in two academic hospitals, one adult and one child, presents findings on the differences in COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy by race/ethnicity among health care workers. Striking differences were found across race and ethnic groups regarding reported vaccine hesitancy with Whites, on average, having the lowest level of hesitancy. Hesitancy was defined as not planning on, being unsure, or planning to delay getting a COVID-19 vaccine. Black, Asian, Hispanic or Latino, and mixed-race participants were more hesitant than Whites. Reasons for hesitancy include concern regarding side effects, the newness of the vaccine, and lack of vaccine knowledge.
