Focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the diversion of resources, attention, and efforts away from other critical public health issues. This diversion has led to missed opportunities and negative consequences for various public health domains, such as chronic disease prevention, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and environmental health. This article suggests the need for a comprehensive approach that balances the response to COVID-19 with the maintenance and resumption of other essential public health activities. It calls for increased investment in public health infrastructure, workforce capacity, and policy frameworks to mitigate the opportunity costs and ensure a more resilient and equitable public health system in the future.

This article discusses what is needed to establish and improve evidence-based decision making competencies in local public health departments. It identifies five domains of “administrative evidence-based practices” to help local health departments: leadership, workforce development, organizational culture and climate, partnerships, and financial transparency. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the role systemic inequities play in health and health care. Health professions education and training should include guidance on how to address these inequities and how to have deep conversations within our learning institutions. This article outlines a novel framework for training health professionals and health professional educators to communicate about diversity, equity, and inclusion more effectively. The framework embraces a dialogue model called “medical improv.” Key elements of this model include examinations of identity and positionality, caretaking and team-making, and conversations with a skeptic.

This proposed policy statement identifies a rethinking the public health workforce structure as a means to promote health equity. This analysis summarizes responses from the 2021 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey to gain insight into governmental public health workers’ needs and experiences. Public health workers continue to be on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic and recruiting and retaining workers is an important element of an effective emergency response. Pride in public health and teamwork were identified as positive aspects of the job, while burnout and unappreciation were cited as negative aspects.

Systematic Review/Meta-Analysis
This review of state data collection and reporting practices during the COVID-19 pandemic found inconsistencies and gaps in data collected by race and ethnicity. Improved standardization across the U.S.–which may come in the form of a federally-operated centralized database–would address some of the concerns in data representation of all Americans.

This research paper discusses various public health agency websites and official government websites in countries with more than 5,000 confirmed COVID cases. The researchers used various methods to determine the readability level of the websites. The researchers found that official COVID information put out by states often exceeded the recommended reading level, while federal information was found to be much more readable, most likely due to federal mandates for readability. Recommendations are to use plain-language COVID resources to be more accessible to all audiences.

This brief lists interventions to support state public health efforts to address rural disparities and racial discrimination. It emphasizes the importance of localized data on social determinants of health and improving systemic and structural underpinnings of racial disparities. This article discusses the work of Israel’s multidisciplinary academic group on children and coronavirus (MACC) to examine the role of children in viral transmission and assessing the necessity and consequences of restricted in-class education. This article focuses on the evolution, activities, policy inputs, and media profile of MACC, and discusses the role of academics in advocacy and activism in the midst of a global pandemic.

This article parallels the works of the multidisciplinary academic group on children and coronavirus (MACC) in Israel with a multidisciplinary team from John Hopkins’ own efforts to create data-driven solutions to minimize health and education inequities for children throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This project produced several outputs including a series of free, web-based, school-reopening modules for school and district administrators; a 2020-2021 School Reopening Tracker based on publicly available data sources; a Teacher & School Staff Vaccination COVID-19 Dashboard; and a COVID-19 Global Education Recovery Tracker. Links to all these resources are included in the article.
