The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the role systemic inequities play in health and health care. Health professions education and training should include guidance on how to address these inequities and how to have deep conversations within our learning institutions. This article outlines a novel framework for training health professionals and health professional educators to communicate about diversity, equity, and inclusion more effectively. The framework embraces a dialogue model called “medical improv.” Key elements of this model include examinations of identity and positionality, caretaking and team-making, and conversations with a skeptic.

This article discusses the work of Israel’s multidisciplinary academic group on children and coronavirus (MACC) to examine the role of children in viral transmission and assessing the necessity and consequences of restricted in-class education. This article focuses on the evolution, activities, policy inputs, and media profile of MACC, and discusses the role of academics in advocacy and activism in the midst of a global pandemic.

This article parallels the works of the multidisciplinary academic group on children and coronavirus (MACC) in Israel with a multidisciplinary team from John Hopkins’ own efforts to create data-driven solutions to minimize health and education inequities for children throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This project produced several outputs including a series of free, web-based, school-reopening modules for school and district administrators; a 2020-2021 School Reopening Tracker based on publicly available data sources; a Teacher & School Staff Vaccination COVID-19 Dashboard; and a COVID-19 Global Education Recovery Tracker. It also offers advice on how districts can plan—in partnership with stakeholders inside and outside education—for longer-term changes to teacher pipelines, the employee value proposition for teachers, and the teacher role itself that will bring many more talented professionals into the classroom to support students in the critical years ahead.

This toolkit is an easy-to-use, practical resource that aims to help leaders make decisions and actionable plans amid these complicated questions. The planning framework that is the crux of this toolkit takes leaders through four key steps: Reground, Prioritize, Plan, and Connect. At each step, leaders are prompted with a series of key questions to help clarify their thinking and decision-making. These resources help leaders move from making decisions in a reactive, crisis-driven way to developing intentional short- and long-term actionable plans.

This guide provides tools for states, counties, and city health departments to advance community-based workforce principles. It provides an overview, suggested strategies, and resources for adopting the six principles. The principles include: recruiting with a racial equity framework; investing in trusted voices (including community health workers); strengthening connections with psychosocial services; embedding job training and pipelines to careers; launching community-based jobs programs; and strengthening community funding.

This report examines decarceration as a public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. People in correctional facilities are more susceptible to COVID-19 for a wide variety of reasons, including overcrowding and higher rates of pre-existing conditions. Public health agencies can advocate for these decarceration policies or participate directly in discharge planning or health care provision to these vulnerable populations.

This framework focuses on strategies and action steps recommended for health departments to enhance access to testing, quality care, and prevention methods in correctional/incarceration facilities. This resource opines that health departments, which often provide health care in carceral settings or contract private organizations to provide health care, should strengthen health care services for incarcerated people. All people, regardless of whether they are incarcerated, should have immediate access to testing, care, and the ability to protect themselves from disease.

Using public information, the researchers in this study constructed and analyzed a database of incarceration episodes in the city jail system, focusing on what happened March 23-29, 2020, immediately following the mayor’s order to release individuals incarcerated in New York City jails who were at high risk of contracting the disease and at low risk of committing criminal re-offense. They found that being discharged during the focus week was associated with a lower probability of readmission as compared to being discharged during the same calendar week in previous years. Furthermore, comparing the individuals discharged during the focus week of 2020 to those discharged during the same calendar week in previous years, they found that the former group was, on average, slightly older than the latter group, although the difference was not large. Additionally, the individuals in the former group had spent substantially longer in jail than those in the latter group.

This study examines the impact that COVID-19 has on incarcerated populations by analyzing systematic data on testing, test positivity, cases, and case fatality. Using data from the COVID Prison Project, the study presents data from 53 prison systems and compares these data with each state’s general population. Many states were not reporting full information on COVID-19 testing with some also not reporting on case fatality. Among those reporting data, there was wide variation between testing, test positivity, and case rates within prison systems and as compared to the general population. However, when more tests were deployed, more cases were identified, with the majority of state prisons having higher case rates than their general population.
