This case study describes how the Massachusetts Department of Public Health has partnered with a wide range of community-based organizations to ensure food security. Before the pandemic, these partners worked together to change policies related to food security, while, during the pandemic, this partnership allowed communities to quickly provide emergency food distribution. Through this network, the department and communities both created guidelines to address food securities and worked to outreach to communities about these strategies, including by reaching individuals in their languages.

This report details the immense toll the COVID-19 pandemic has taken, and continues to take, on Black communities. The report’s authors – physicians and public health and policy experts – note massive disparities experienced by Black Americans. The worse outcomes, are a predictable result of structural and social realities. The predicates that caused these disparities have long been present. These are cycles we have to break. The report highlights areas for immediate focus and attention, and presents a set of expert-generated recommendations for action.

This article highlights the intersection between the built environment, health, and COVID-19 outcomes, while emphasizing racial and economic disparities in access to health-promoting environmental features (such as walkability and green space). Using Toronto, Canada as an example, the author identifies four specific built environment interventions to promote an equitable, healthy urban environment. This paper reviews pathways from evictions to COVID-19 transmissions and presents some of the policies related to eviction, such as eviction moratoria, that have been implemented in the US, including the CARES Act at the Federal level and research by the Eviction Lab comparing eviction policies in 25 cities. It reports the effects of offering eviction counsel to citizens at risk of eviction in New York City, the Michigan Eviction Diversion Program, and the expansion of Medicaid in some California counties through the Affordable Care Act. This paper also features a summary of policies related to eviction and their impact on COVID-19.

Case Study
The Rebuilding Neighborhoods Initiative convened community organizers, small business owners, and corporations in the technology and innovation sector to develop community-centered, implementable solutions addressing gentrification and the lack of affordable housing in three greater Boston neighborhoods. Six monthly meetings were held on topics related to affordable housing. Each neighborhood had a team of 5-6 individuals who were developing and committing to shared goals towards equitable development.

Case Study
The case study outlines how Solano Public Health used funding to create a Race Equity Team, which conducted trainings internally and built relationships with external partners to address policy changes focused on racial equity. The Solano Public Health Division used this grant funding to work with community partners and other government agencies to undertake projects focused in low-resourced neighborhoods, such as conducting healthy store makeovers, adopting and implementing policies to increase access to water in parks and schools, improving clinical prevention referrals, and introducing policies that address access and exposure to tobacco. Of note, much of this work has focused on racial equity in the realm of chronic disease prevention in low-resourced neighborhoods.

The case study outlines how the city of King County created an interbranch team to focus on developing tools and policies to focus on equity across all government departments. The team has focused on providing trainings and assistance, helping with equity strategic planning and implementation, and training teams within each agency/department to focus on equity.
