This study evaluated COVID-19 data from a major federally qualified health center in Providence, R.I., to see how the Hispanic/Latinx community was impacted during three re-opening phases within the state. When compared to data from the entire state, Hispanic/Latinx individuals experienced higher rates of positivity than any other racial group, with urban Hispanics at greatest risk for contracting COVID-19. The paper urges further investigation on the causes for this disparity, as well as targeted interventions to counteract it.
Emerging Practices that show potential to achieve desirable public health outcomes in a specific real-life setting and produce early results that are consistent with the objectives of the activities and thus indicate effectiveness.

This study used data from Mass General Brigham in Boston, Mass., to identify the drivers of differences in use of telemedicine and telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results found that Hispanic adults older than 65 with limited English proficiency were more likely to experience a digital divide in health care.

This study looks at patients tested for COVID-19 in a healthcare system in Northern California to determine if racial/ethnic minorities were disproportionately affected by the pandemic. Results found that Hispanic individuals were more likely to test positive for COVID-19. This study demonstrates the need for public health interventions to target Hispanic populations.

This study looks at data of confirmed COVID-19 patients from the Memorial Healthcare System in South Florida. Based upon the results, the team found several health outcomes contribute to hospitalization, re-admission, and death. Evidence found that people with Hispanic ethnicity are of a greater risk of a 30-day readmission from COVID-19 worsening symptoms.

This study recommends that governments should continue to fund and prioritize use of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) as major vaccine administration sites. This retrospective cohort study examines COVID-19 vaccination administration rates at FQHCs by race and ethnicity and also the racial and ethnic equity in vaccine receipt at FQHCs. The results of the study found that vaccine administration at FQHCs was equitable for American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, and Hispanic populations, but there were inequities for the Black population. FQHCs have provided critical access to COVID-19 vaccinations for patients from diverse racial and ethnic groups. This resource may help motivate governments to continue funding and prioritizing the use of FQHCs by showing that these health centers have provided access to COVID-19 vaccinations for patients from diverse economic, racial, and ethnic groups.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a telephone-based intervention using a Regional Operational Call Center as a primary method of providing COVID-19 information to rural communities and connecting those at risk with medical appointments. Results indicated that interaction with the call center led to an increased likelihood of scheduling a healthcare appointment and receiving a COVID test.

Using patient record data from the New York University Langone Health System, this study examines outcomes from individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 in New York City from March 1 through April 8, 2020, to examine differences in outcomes based on age, sex, body mass index, comorbidity, insurance type, and neighborhood socioeconomic status. The results indicated that while Black and Hispanic communities were experiencing larger mortality rates in the general population, the study did not find that Black and Hispanic individuals are experiencing worse COVID-19 outcomes, including mortality when hospitalized, as compared to hospitalized patients who are white. This study supports the idea that existing social determinants of health, such as access to housing, access to health care, differential employment outcomes, and poverty can impact mortality rates for Black and Hispanic communities.
