This study recommends that governments should continue to fund and prioritize use of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) as major vaccine administration sites. This retrospective cohort study examines COVID-19 vaccination administration rates at FQHCs by race and ethnicity and also the racial and ethnic equity in vaccine receipt at FQHCs. The results of the study found that vaccine administration at FQHCs was equitable for American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, and Hispanic populations, but there were inequities for the Black population. FQHCs have provided critical access to COVID-19 vaccinations for patients from diverse racial and ethnic groups. This resource may help motivate governments to continue funding and prioritizing the use of FQHCs by showing that these health centers have provided access to COVID-19 vaccinations for patients from diverse economic, racial, and ethnic groups.

This article evaluates the effectiveness of a “Motivate, Vaccinate, and Activate” strategy to increase the vaccination of Hispanic/Latinx San Francisco Mission residents. The strategy relied on community mobilization and ambassadors to motivate others to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Following the implementation of this strategy, vaccination rates among Hispanic/Latinx community members exceeded the overall vaccination rate of Hispanic/Latinx residents across San Francisco.

This study is an evaluation of a community-based “Test-to-Care” model that was developed to address barriers for socioeconomically vulnerable Latinx individuals with newly diagnosed COVID-19 and their households. This “Test-to-Care” demonstration project was implemented in the Mission district of San Francisco, CA. It was developed with input from community members and public health leaders, with the key components including: 1) provision of COVID-19 related education and information about available community resources, 2) home deliveries of material goods to facilitate safe isolation and quarantine, and 3) longitudinal clinical and social support. The Test-to Care team consisted of healthcare providers and community health workers. The model was evaluated using the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance Framework. The evaluation of the model found that it is a feasible and acceptable intervention for supporting self-isolation and quarantine among newly diagnosed COVID-19 patients and their households by directly addressing key barriers faced by socioeconomically vulnerable populations.

The article presents strategies of how Durham County Department of Public Health operationalized equity into multiple phases of its COVID-19 response through infrastructure changes and how to apply these methods to future public health emergencies to better serve vulnerable populations. This response relied upon robust data collection of demographic data to identify inequities. Infrastructure changes included standing up multiple COVID-19 Task Forces (Homeless, Community, Food Security, African American) and Strike Teams (Long-Term Care Facility, Clusters) targeting vulnerable populations; placing testing sites in targeted locations; collaborating with multisector and community partners for feedback; and providing Health Ambassadors for in-person dissemination of COVID-19 information. The paper reviews results from these interventions and lessons learned.

In this paper, the authors explore the relationships between structural racism and the Black-White disparity and Hispanic-White disparity in COVID-19 vaccination rates across 45 U.S. states. The authors use racially stratified vaccination data to conduct a detailed exploration of vaccination disparities within the United States for both the non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic populations compared to the non-Hispanic White population.

The authors conducted a systematic review to understand disparities in H1N1 vaccine uptake by race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, rural/urban residence, population density, and disability status, and factors associated with unequal uptake, as well as the benefits and harms of interventions designed to attenuate inequities in H1N1 vaccine uptake—in an effort to address potential disparities in COVID-19 vaccine access and uptake.

The authors assessed intent to be vaccinated and concerns among members of seven U.S. racial and ethnic groups (1,000 Black, 500 American Indian/Alaska Native, 1,000 Asian, 1,000 Latino [500 English-speaking and 500 Spanish-speaking], 500 Pacific Islander, 500 multiracial, and 1,000 White adults) in the COVID-19′s Unequal Racial Burden (CURB) survey conducted December 2020-February 2021.

This article includes commentary for public health agencies, the healthcare community, and professional schools to develop an approach to allocate the COVID-19 vaccine in a way that does not rely on health information technology as the predominant means to vaccine access. The authors notes that doing so will provide better access to medical care during the ongoing pandemic and perhaps carve out a new model that improves healthcare access after we conquer COVID-19.

This article explores how the relationships between vaccine site density, vaccination rates, and social vulnerability are connected across metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas in the U.S. The study uses CDC Social Vulnerability Index data combined with vaccination site density data to examine how vaccination site placement can benefit highly vulnerable populations. The results determined that while areas with higher socioeconomic vulnerability contain a large density of vaccination sites, this does not affect the low vaccination rates found in these communities. Other methods besides vaccination site placement must be considered to overcome these barriers in vaccination rates.
