This study uses individual-level COVID-19 data from Michigan to analyze incidence and mortality rates based on race/ethnicity demographics and other socioeconomic factors. Results found African Americans have the highest confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases, but that disparities likely exist due to variations in household, community, and workplace exposure rather than case-fatality rates.

This research links test results from a national laboratory database to the residential ZIP code from U.S. Census data, comparing positive rates of COVID-19 by race and ethnicity. The results show a correlation between ZIP codes with the highest proportion of Black and Hispanic populations and the highest rates of COVID-19.

This systematic review examines COVID-19 literature on the association of race and ethnicity with COVID-19 outcomes. It also examines the association between race, ethnicity, COVID-19 outcomes, and socioeconomic determinants. Within these studies, it is shown that African American and Hispanic individuals are most likely to test positive, while Asian Americans have the highest risk for ICU admission and mortality rates run higher in Hispanic and Asian Americans. These results demonstrate health disparities for minority groups across various factors. Socioeconomic factors additionally are associated with worse COVID-19 outcomes.

This article is part of a series that explores COVID-19 related experiences of assistive technology (AT) users across the world. This article focuses on a survey of AT users from six regions, and the results show that AT users in minority groups living with existing health disparities are unduly impacted by the functionality of AT tools. The article offers specific recommendations for future action to strengthen AT across public policy and civil society in pandemic preparedness and response.

This study compares Veterans Association (VA) Electronic Health Records data with county-level sociodeterminant factors to determine correlations between income inequality and COVID-19 incidence rates for veterans. Results found that female, Black, urban, low-income, and disabled veterans are more likely to test positive for COVID-19.

This article looks at traditional ways of reporting COVID-19 case data through a look at historical data and improves upon the methodology by analyzing both historical data and other external factors. The study team developed a nonlinear autoregressive exogenous input (NARX) neural network-based algorithm that, when compared to traditional data collection in other countries, offers more accurate and viable results.

This study looks at the results of an online survey conducted in Arkansas in July and August 2020 to measure COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy. The survey featured questions about COVID-19 health literacy, fear of COVID-19 injection, general trust or mistrust of vaccines, and COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy as they relate to an individual’s sociodemographics. Results found that Black respondents with low socioeconomic status are more likely than White individuals to mistrust the COVID-19 vaccine.

This article conducted a cross-sectional study of 351 Massachusetts cities and towns from January 1-May 6, 2020, to understand what demographic, economic, and occupational factors are affecting COVID-19 incidence rates. Results found that non-Latino Black and Latino populations are at most risk of contracting COVID-19. Addressing factors like healthcare access for foreign-born non-citizens, crowded housing, and the protection of food service workers may help mitigate spread among minority populations.

This article provides a framework for the application of big data analytic technology to assist in the prevention and control of major public health incidents, including the most recent SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. This article serves as recommendations for large scale entities and governments to building capacity for data analytics to be utilized for epidemic prevention and control.
