Prepared by the Community-Based Workforce Alliance, this report provides steps for local health departments (LHDs) looking to integrate community health workers (CHWs) into their health equity efforts. Utilizing a framework based on the Community Health Worker Assessment and Improvement Matrix and adapted to the COVID-19 response within the U.S., this report presents a continuum of engagement across several key areas to design or improve CHW-based programs to deliver optimal results. The report also includes a series of strategic recommendations for making discrete improvements across all areas of engagement.

This article parallels the works of the multidisciplinary academic group on children and coronavirus (MACC) in Israel with a multidisciplinary team from John Hopkins’ own efforts to create data-driven solutions to minimize health and education inequities for children throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This project produced several outputs including a series of free, web-based, school-reopening modules for school and district administrators; a 2020-2021 School Reopening Tracker based on publicly available data sources; a Teacher & School Staff Vaccination COVID-19 Dashboard; and a COVID-19 Global Education Recovery Tracker. This report details the immense toll the COVID-19 pandemic has taken, and continues to take, on Black communities. The report’s authors – physicians and public health and policy experts – note massive disparities experienced by Black Americans. The worse outcomes, are a predictable result of structural and social realities. The predicates that caused these disparities have long been present. These are cycles we have to break. The report highlights areas for immediate focus and attention, and presents a set of expert-generated recommendations for action.

Recent national surveys of young people have shown alarming increases in the prevalence of certain mental health challenges. We know that mental health is shaped by many factors, from our genes and brain chemistry to our relationships with family and friends, neighborhood conditions, and larger social forces and policies. As we learn the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic, and start recovering and rebuilding, we have an opportunity. Everyone has a role to play in combating this mental health pandemic. Ensuring healthy children and families will take an all-of-society effort, including policy, institutional, and individual changes. This advisory provides actionable recommendations for young people and their families, schools and health care systems, tech and media companies, employers, community organizations and governments alike. Mental health challenges are treatable and often preventable. This advisory shows how.

This scoping review of public health interventions summarizes the lessons learned from the HIV prevention literature to inform the development of COVID-19 prevention and mitigation strategies. The authors focus on multiple levels of intervention, including intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, and social factors. Each of these provides a reference point for understanding and elaborating on social/behavioral lessons learned from HIV prevention and treatment research. Further, preventing the worst care scenarios of COVID-19 morbidity and mortality can be achieved by incorporating strategies that address the intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, and societal levels of data-driven and well-coordinated interventions. While HIV prevention and treatment sciences have not always achieved these goals, the lessons that have been learned should help guide the development of efforts that respond to COVID-19 and future pandemics.
