To make sure we’re accurately understanding people’s health, we need to use the same measuring tools in the same way for everyone, no matter who they are. In this study, Cintron and their team checked if a widely used depression test, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8), works the same for different groups of people based on their age, gender, education, and race. They found that in about 24% of the cases, the test worked a little differently for these different groups. However, this is just slightly below the 25% limit we usually use to decide if the test is working the same for everyone. So, in general, the PHQ-8 seems to measure depression in a similar way for all the groups they studied. To make sure we’re treating everyone fairly when collecting health data, we should do similar research for other common tests and questionnaires to see if they work the same for different groups of people.

The article emphasizes the importance of addressing these collateral impacts and implementing strategies to mitigate the negative consequences. It suggests various approaches such as ensuring vaccine supply chains, enhancing public trust in vaccines, and implementing catch-up vaccination campaigns. The authors stress the need for collaborative efforts between public health agencies, healthcare providers, and communities to restore and maintain routine immunization services amidst the ongoing pandemic.

This study assesses the usefulness in death data from a medical examiner’s office in strategic planning during a pandemic. There was found to be a statistically significant correlation between daily reported death numbers from a medical examiner’s office and hospital admissions. As such, death data from a medical examiner’s office can be assumed to be a reliable source and used when developing strategic plans.

This article conducts a retrospective case-control study of electronic health records of individuals who were diagnosed with COVID-19 and have a recent diagnosis of substance use disorder (SUD). The results show that those diagnosed with SUD, particularly African Americans and those with opioid use disorder (OUD), are more likely to contract COVID-19, as well as suffer worsening outcomes such as hospitalization and mortality due to COVID-19. This article shows that an increase in SUD screening could be a factor in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 in this community.

This study examines a cohort of patients testing for COVID-19 in a large healthcare setting spanning California, Oregon, and Washington between March 1 and December 31, 2020. to determine the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of these patients. Results found that major healthcare disparities were evident, particularly among Hispanics. Hispanic individuals tested positive at a higher rate, required excess hospitalization and mechanical ventilation, and had higher odds of in-hospital mortality despite younger ages. Targeted, culturally responsive interventions and equitable vaccine development and distribution are needed to address the increased risk of poorer COVID-19 outcomes among minority populations.

This study details an analysis of data from the University of Maryland family medicine and immediate care (UFM) practices to examine an association between COVID-19 infections and demographic and socioeconomic factors. Results found that Black and Hispanic patients were more likely test positive for COVID-19, and those living in areas with a high Area Deprivation Index score experienced higher risks of infections.

This study conducted an analysis of COVID-19 hospitalizations in 12 states — Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Virginia, and Washington — to look at correlations between COVID-19 hospitalizations and race/ethnicity. These 12 states were chosen because they report race and ethnicity in hospitalization data. Results show a variation of racial disparities by state, which highlights the need for increased data reporting and consistency across all states.

This article examines racial and ethnic disparities in COVID-19 test positivity rate and mortality in emergency department patients in Northern California. The results show a significant disparity amongst Black and Latinx patients, with higher COVID-19 positive testing rates and an increase in hospitalization rates amongst these groups.

This article discusses the use of wastewater surveillance to indicate new levels of COVID-19 or other infection in congregate housing settings. The study sampled wastewater from a hospital and a wastewater treatment plant to detect levels of COVID-19 in the individuals residing in the hospital. The results were able to indicate levels of COVID-19 in the wastewater, but were unable to distinguish between new infection levels and residual viral shed from previously infected patients. This study shows the potential of wastewater management, and calls for the increased refinement of the process to more accurately monitor viral spread in vulnerable living situations.
