Recent national surveys of young people have shown alarming increases in the prevalence of certain mental health challenges. We know that mental health is shaped by many factors, from our genes and brain chemistry to our relationships with family and friends, neighborhood conditions, and larger social forces and policies. As we learn the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic, and start recovering and rebuilding, we have an opportunity. Everyone has a role to play in combating this mental health pandemic. Ensuring healthy children and families will take an all-of-society effort, including policy, institutional, and individual changes. This advisory provides actionable recommendations for young people and their families, schools and health care systems, tech and media companies, employers, community organizations and governments alike. Mental health challenges are treatable and often preventable. This advisory shows how.

This resources summarizes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on substance use and the experiences of people who used drugs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Highlights include: the pandemic increased the risk of overdose for people who use drugs, and in response people who use drugs reported using more harm reduction strategies. The pandemic also motivated change in wanting to quit drug use for study participants, but also highlighted the social determinants of health as barriers to sustainable recovery.

This article recognizes the challenges and describes the adaptations necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the workplace. It also emphasizes employee mental health needs. A theoretical framework for organizational interventions is included that utilizes an Occupational Health Psychology approach. This practice describes a Three-Phase Approach to mitigating COVID-19 in long-term and post-acute care nursing facilities in the Seattle, WA area. The authors outline a structure for addressing the pandemic based on disease surveillance measures, with different focus areas within each phase. Measures include:
(1) Initial: Communication, tracking, PPE preparation
(2) Delayed: Education, testing, isolation
(3) Surge: Activation of a “drop team”” of health care professionals during an outbreak

The onset of the pandemic created the need for multiple adaptations to the criminal justice system, including how to provide treatment for substance use disorder while in quarantine, how to continue opioid treatment for early release of individuals to the community, and how to limit the spread of COVID-19 in carceral facilities.
