This article discusses what can be learned from the response to COVID-19 within the United States-Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPIs). Rates of COVID-19 in this region were much lower than those in the mainland US, despite fewer public health resources. The article credits this to strong partnership and collaboration with neighboring islands, the mainland US, and the federal government; strong regional information sharing; creating and nurturing local and regional trust; and trust regionally; and decisive and aggressive quarantine practices.

The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene partnered with 45 businesses or faith-based organizations in the Northeast Bronx to increase COVID-19 and flu vaccine knowledge and uptake in predominantly Black and Hispanic areas. The program disseminated health information through trusted community leaders to address vaccine hesitancy. ZIP codes with higher involvement in the program showed greater increases in vaccination rates.

This article details the Project HAPPY (HIV/AIDS Prevention Project for Youth) and how it engaged Black/African-American youth through research and implementation of the project. Youth were a part of expert panel that reviewed proposed HIV/AIDS curricula. and did outreach to get youth enrolled in the program. They recruited 431 teens and enrolled 57%, with 72% of enrolled youth attending all sessions.

To help policymakers and other stakeholders identify opportunities to improve health equity in their states, SHADAC has produced a set of data resources for the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Survey — combining the three most recent years of data (2018–2020) to improve our ability to develop reliable state-level estimates for smaller population subgroups — SHADAC created maps and charts showing how states compare to the U.S. average in measures of people’s self-reported physical and mental health, and how people’s physical and mental health varies depending on their race and ethnicity, level of income, and age within each state.

In northwest Arkansas, the Marshallese community has experienced a disproportionate COVID-19 burden. This response plan, funded by the CARES act, hired English/Marshallese bilingual staff to provide contact tracing, navigation, and other types of response. Staff that were not bilingual participated in cultural humility training.

This policy brief details how public transportation options can improve health and health equity by reducing traffic crashes and air pollution, increasing physical activity, and improving access to medical care, healthy food, vital services, employment, and social connection. This article summarizes the challenges COVID-19 poses to African American communities, policy considerations, and recommendations based on community members/community-based participatory research. Recommendations include: (1) Promote local community leadership to proactively inform mitigation strategies; (2) Strategically engage public health and community-attuned policy leaders and prioritize community stimulus strategies; (3) Cultivate community-informed public health disaster health literacy; (4) Foster culturally tailored behavioral and mental health dialogue and response; (5) Prioritize patient-centered medical homes and neighborhood models and (6) Redefine essential workers.
