This article discusses the process used by the New York City Health Department to prioritize populations for access to the first round of COVID-19 vaccines. The city’s process was guided by input gathered during five public meetings. During these meetings, participants emphasized the need to prioritize health equity, examining the broad swatch of personal and societal factors that make people more or less susceptible to severe COVID-19 disease.

This review of state data collection and reporting practices during the COVID-19 pandemic found inconsistencies and gaps in data collected by race and ethnicity. The El Bari Clinic launched a telemedicine initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce in-person visits and reduce transportation as a barrier to accessing health care. The Rebuilding Neighborhoods Initiative convened community organizers, small business owners, and corporations in the technology and innovation sector to develop community-centered, implementable solutions addressing gentrification and the lack of affordable housing in three greater Boston neighborhoods. Six monthly meetings were held on topics related to affordable housing. Each neighborhood had a team of 5-6 individuals who were developing and committing to shared goals towards equitable development.

The Packed Promise intervention sent monthly food boxes and food vouchers to families with children eligible for free school meals in Chickasaw Nation territory in rural Oklahoma. The deliveries themselves were successful and led to modest improvements in children’s fruit, vegetable, and whole-grain consumption, but the intervention did not result in statistically significant reductions in children’s food insecurity. Adult food insecurity was reduced initially, but the reduction was not sustained after 18 months. 2 articles were written to assess Packed Promise’s impacts on food insecurity (Briefel et al.) and fruit/veg consumption (Cabili et al.).

This was a randomized, quasi-experimental study of an intervention that was implemented among rural and urban populations to encourage online grocery shopping and more nutritious food purchases. The authors targeted rural counties with high poverty rates for recruitment. The results showed that online shopping can improve food shopping habits and accessibility.

This case study described a partnership to rapidly deliver food to isolated and quarantined individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in response to a COVID-19 surge in June 2020. An existing community-based participatory research group in Northwest Arkansas utilized diverse partnerships that were possible due to existing relationships established before the pandemic and leveraged to rapidly deploy the food delivery program. This case study demonstrates how this program can serve as a model for other organizations doing similar work.

This case study outlines how the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) in Illinois partnered with community organizers on worker and immigrant rights to create a multisectoral collaborative to address root causes of health inequity called the Collaborative for Health Equity. This collaborative explicitly works to address structural racism and health inequities. It has built relationships with local social justice organizations that have helped guide CCDPH to center health equity in its strategic plans.
