This article parallels the works of the multidisciplinary academic group on children and coronavirus (MACC) in Israel with a multidisciplinary team from John Hopkins’ own efforts to create data-driven solutions to minimize health and education inequities for children throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. To help policymakers and other stakeholders identify opportunities to improve health equity in their states, SHADAC has produced a set of data resources for the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Survey — combining the three most recent years of data (2018–2020) to improve our ability to develop reliable state-level estimates for smaller population subgroups — SHADAC created maps and charts showing how states compare to the U.S. average in measures of people’s self-reported physical and mental health, and how people’s physical and mental health varies depending on their race and ethnicity, level of income, and age within each state.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation established a National Commission to Transform Public Health Data Systems to reimagine how data are collected, shared, and used, and to identify the investments needed to improve health equity. Commissioners examined both the systems and the data needed to ensure public health information works for all. The commission offers recommendations for government at all levels — business, community-based organizations, philanthropy, and others — to take specific action to reimagine and modernize the public health data system. A series of white papers describe the current landscape, emerging innovations, and the opportunities for transforming and transitioning to a new public health data system.
