This report from RAND Corporation presents the results of a nationally-representative survey of Black Americans, coupled with follow-up data collected through interviews with survey participants who expressed vaccine hesitancy. The report identifies factors contributing to mistrust and provides recommendations to improve health messaging and communication to address vaccine hesitancy in Black communities. The practice strategy this resource is focused on is reducing vaccine hesitancy.

This resource discusses Project: ACE-IT which is a school-based testing intervention implemented in Pennsylvania. The goal of the program was to reduce in-school transmission risks through routine testing for symptomatic and possibly asymptomatic staff and students. This program was originally adapted from a school-based program in Texas, and has expanded using a ‘train the trainer’ model with materials available on the website.

This commentary describes racial disparities in access to medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder (OUD) and how pandemic-related changes in access to MAT may exacerbate these disparities. The article describes a study undertaken to determine whether messages delivered by physicians improve COVID-19 knowledge and preventive behaviors, and to assess the differential effectiveness of messages tailored to the Black community. This randomized control trial that included a sample of self-identified White and Black adults with less than a college education was conducted from August 7 to September 6, 2020. The final sample had 20,460 individuals (participation rate, 68%). Participants saw video messages delivered either by a Black or a White study physician. In addition, participants saw three placebo videos with generic health topics in the control groups. Participants in both the control and intervention groups were also randomly assigned to see 1 of 2 American Medical Association statements, one on structural racism and the other on drug price transparency. A physician messaging campaign effectively increased diverse groups’ COVID-19 knowledge, information-seeking, and self-reported protective behaviors.

This article describes the rapid scale-up of adolescent telehealth services at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Division of Adolescent Medicine. While the scale-up was partially effective in reaching some underserved populations (e.g., people living with HIV, people with substance use disorder, people living with mental illness), racial disparities in visit completion rates are concerning and would need to be addressed by sites replicating this intervention to avoid exacerbating health disparities. The practice strategy this article is focused on is adolescent telehealth services.

Case Study
The article presents a mental health intervention for LGBTQ+ youth delivered by telehealth. This article describes the application of a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach through an online telehealth program called AFFIRM. The affirm approach covered 8 group sessions focusing on youth LGBTQ+ populations and included a brief case study highlighting the approach and feedback from one individual. Though the case study discussed in this article is brief, the Affirmative CBT model has been addressed in other studies and was found to reduce depression, mental health risks, and increase coping skills.The intervention may be useful to bridge access gaps presented by COVID-19.

The resource presents 7 recommendations to mitigate COVID-19 health disparities among African Americans in the areas of data collection, COVID-19 exposure and testing, health systems collaboration, human capital repurposing, and resource allocation. The authors based the recommendations on the existing public health literature and and on an analysis of relevant bioethical principles. The authors also provide information on the efforts of Chicago, Illinois’ mayoral Racial Equity Rapid Response Team to reduce these disparities in a major urban US setting.
