Despite facing vulnerabilities such as limited access to healthcare and infrastructure, these communities had lower COVID-19 death rates compared to southern regions. The article highlights the importance of Indigenous health-care sovereignty and self-determination in controlling the spread of the virus. Indigenous-led decision-making, community-centered approaches, and cultural relevance played a crucial role in mitigating the impact of the pandemic. Recognizing and promoting Indigenous Peoples’ self-determination in healthcare is essential for developing sustainable health-care systems and addressing future health crises.

Data from the Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey (AMES) was used by CDC to assess 9th-12th grade student behaviors and experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The prevalence of poor mental health and suicidality was high across students of all sex, sexual identity, and racial and ethnic groups; however, poor mental health, persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors were less prevalent among those who felt close to persons at school and were virtually connected with others during the pandemic. The mental health of youth might be improved via strategies that improve connections with others at home, in the community, and at school.

Recent national surveys of young people have shown alarming increases in the prevalence of certain mental health challenges. We know that mental health is shaped by many factors, from our genes and brain chemistry to our relationships with family and friends, neighborhood conditions, and larger social forces and policies. As we learn the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic, and start recovering and rebuilding, we have an opportunity. Everyone has a role to play in combating this mental health pandemic. Ensuring healthy children and families will take an all-of-society effort, including policy, institutional, and individual changes. This article describes how the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB) telehealth program, known as Extensions for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO), or teleECHO, adapted to COVID-19 in providing community clinicians/public health workers access to experts. This article summarizes COVID-19 mitigation within the Blackfeet Tribal Reservation and changes in incidence depending on the enforcement of masking, stay-at-home orders, and contact tracing. The combination of these efforts was associated with a 33-fold reduction in COVID-19 incidence from October 5 to November 7 in 2020.

This resource makes recommendations related to establishing crisis stabilization systems for persons living with mental illness. This article describes how pandemic-related changes and funding increases can be leveraged to strengthen statewide crisis stabilization systems for individuals living with mental illness and substance use disorder, including recommendations for specific stakeholders to engage and action steps. The practice strategy this article is focused on is policy and organizational change to improve public health infrastructure.

This article describes the multi-pronged approach taken by the Klamath tribes to address COVID-19 across multiple tribal communities. An Emergency Preparedness Incident Management Team (IMT) managed the response by implementing outreach, wrap-around services (groceries, residential, medicine, etc.), tribal policies, and testing protocols. Between March to September 2020, no deaths were reported (unlike the county overall) and 12% of tribal members were tested.

This article is a review of legal issues impacting Tribal public health during the pandemic. Most notably the article highlights the failure of the federal government to adequately support American Indians and Alaska Natives, as well as the impacts and importance of Tribal authority/jurisdiction in creating culturally appropriate public health measures. The article includes recommendations for Tribal, federal, and local governments in how to best manage the pandemic.
