Data from three rounds of a nationally representative cross-sectional monitoring survey were analyzed to characterize the mental health impacts of COVID-19 on adults living in Canada. This study uniquely highlights trends in mental health at different points in time across the most impacted population groups. The authors advocate for population-based approaches to mental health focusing on root causes and prevention alongside treatment.

This global analysis discusses how cultural tightness (defined as the strength of and adherence to social norms) impacts countries’ success in limiting cases of and deaths from COVID-19. Findings show that “tight” cultures which have strict norms and punishments for deviance had fewer cases and deaths as compared with loose cultures; authors recommend developing new interventions to help countries tighten their social norms.

Developing strategic plans for population health and public health practice is particularly important in situations of scarce resources. This article notes that current planning efforts often rely on single metrics like cost-effectiveness and lack transparency and stakeholder input. It highlights the usefulness of multi-criteria decision-making tools that incorporate multiple stakeholder views and criteria. The authors suggest that institutions of higher education can help improve population and public health practice by teaching students about modern strategic planning tools that incorporate multiple factors and promote transparency and clarity in decision-making.

This article details the work of the Asian Health Services (AHS), a Federally Qualified Health Center located in Alameda County, California. In May 2020, AHS sought to document the experiences and needs of the Asian American community they serve through a cross-sectional survey. The surveys were available in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, traditional Chinese, and Korean. Results display the diverse needs of the Asian American community, including issues with access to testing, anti-Asian discrimination, and language barriers offer several barriers to this community. Survey questions included in the article.

This article analyzed data from the March 2020 Kaiser Family Foundation “Coronavirus Poll” to determine levels of knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions (KAPs) across different groups. The results found that race, sex, education, income, health insurance status, and political views are all associated with KAPs. Racial inequalities exist in the access to and use of existing digital platforms for knowledge dispersal, and alternative information transmission should be used to reach specific marginalized groups.

This study sought to examine perceptions of COVID-19 related to prevention, coping, and testing of African American residents in under-resourced communities in Alabama. Utilizing the PRECEDE-PROCEED model, virtual focus groups were conducted in five urban and rural Alabama communities. The focus groups asked questions about prevention and coping barriers, prevention facilitators, and testing barriers surrounding COVID-19 for these communities. The study finds that addressing downstream determinants might be key in reducing disparities for African Americans, who experience higher rates of health disparities.

This study examined internet access and mode of access by social class, race, and ethnicity among youth in the U.S. to gain insight on whether these vulnerable populations experienced disparities in access and health education. The study found that low-income Black and Hispanic youth are least likely to have access to internet at home, meaning web-based dissemination of health information is not reaching this population.

The authors explored the ways Ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel learned about the pandemic and examined their COVID-19-related decision-making. Drawing on the disproportionate magnitude of COVID-19-related morbidity on Israel’s Ultra-Orthodox Jews, the authors examined their processes of COVID-19 health decision-making. Survey results show that both religious and health-related justifications were common for personal decisions, yet a disparity was found between the ways social distancing guidelines were perceived in the general education context compared to a religious context, signaling the importance for inclusive models of science communication that account for religious sensibilities and state-minority relations.

This study aimed to apply rapid online surveying to determine knowledge and perceptions of COVID-19 among the general public in the United States and the United Kingdom. The findings from this online survey could guide information campaigns by public health authorities, clinicians, and the media. More broadly, rapid online surveys could be an important tool in tracking the public’s knowledge and misperceptions during rapidly moving infectious disease outbreaks.
