The Community Outreach Specialist (COS) program aimed to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake among rural communities through targeted outreach efforts. The program trained and deployed community outreach specialists who engaged with community members, provided education about COVID-19 and vaccination, addressed concerns and misconceptions, and facilitated access to vaccination services. The COS program in reaching and engaging with socially vulnerable and medically underserved populations, successfully increasing vaccine acceptance and uptake in these communities by building trust, addressing barriers to vaccination, and tailoring outreach strategies to the local context. The article discusses the importance of community-based approaches, cultural competency, and collaboration with local organizations and leaders in achieving successful vaccine outreach. This study looks at the perceptions, challenges, barriers, and experiences of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. The study used a snowball sampling of 20 undocumented Asian and Latinx men and women and asked them a series of questions about access to health care and their experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results found significant barriers in language comprehension, mistrust of public systems, and socioeconomic factors such as employers with little to no sick leave for those affected by COVID-19.

Rapid data collection grounded in a community power-building approach produced data that directly informed state policy and an increased power base. This approach enables direct connection to immediate “downstream” needs in communities while simultaneously building collective systemic “upstream” analysis and capacity of community members and laying pathways to translation and implementation of research into policy.

This study looked at variations in COVID-19 diagnoses by ZIP code, race, and ethnicity in Indiana. The study examines patient information from the Indiana University Health system and geolocates the patient’s ZIP codes to calculate the number of COVID-19 cases per 10,000 persons for each ZIP code. The results showed that ZIP codes with higher percentages of African Americans, Hispanics, foreign-born persons, and residents living in poverty are disproportionately affected by COVID-19.

Peer Review Study
This resource discusses the results of the 2020 COVID-19 Resiliency Survey, which was conducted in Chicago, Illinois to gauge the impact of COVID-19 on the city during their first wave of cases. Specific focus is given to the experiences of minority groups, both racial/ethnic and sexual/gender minorities. The results show that these marginalized groups – specifically Black, Latinx, sexual minority and gender minority groups – experience more disparities in COVID-19 exposure, susceptibility, treatment access, and psychosocial effects from the pandemic. The resource offers solutions to reducing these disparities.

Peer Review Study
This article conducted a cross-sectional study of 351 Massachusetts cities and towns from January 1-May 6, 2020, to understand what demographic, economic, and occupational factors are affecting COVID-19 incidence rates. Results found that non-Latino Black and Latino populations are at most risk of contracting COVID-19. Addressing factors like healthcare access for foreign-born non-citizens, crowded housing, and the protection of food service workers may help mitigate spread among minority populations.

Summary Report/Recommendations
This report recommends that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) adopt new practices for collecting data on sex, gender, and sexual orientation — including collecting gender data by default, and not conflating gender with sex as a biological variable. The report recommends standardized language to be used in survey questions that ask about a respondent’s sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation. Better measurements will improve data quality, as well as the NIH’s ability to identify LGBTQI+ populations and understand the challenges they face.

Peer Review Study, Systematic Review/Meta-Analysis
The authors conducted a systematic review to understand disparities in H1N1 vaccine uptake by race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, rural/urban residence, population density, and disability status, and factors associated with unequal uptake, as well as the benefits and harms of interventions designed to attenuate inequities in H1N1 vaccine uptake—in an effort to address potential disparities in COVID-19 vaccine access and uptake.
