During COVID-19, rural areas have seen greater mortality rates and more problems delivering services. This article discusses the challenges rural health departments have faced and the opportunities to use technology to mitigate those challenges. Challenges include the disproportionately low funding the rural health departments receive. Opportunities include departments scheduling electronic public health appointments (such as WIC recertifications), as well as working to expand their partnerships with partners across the state and rethink statewide allocation of public health funding.

In northwest Arkansas, the Marshallese community has experienced a disproportionate COVID-19 burden. This response plan, funded by the CARES act, hired English/Marshallese bilingual staff to provide contact tracing, navigation, and other types of response. Staff that were not bilingual participated in cultural humility training.

This was a randomized, quasi-experimental study of an intervention that was implemented among rural and urban populations to encourage online grocery shopping and more nutritious food purchases. The authors targeted rural counties with high poverty rates for recruitment. The results showed that online shopping can improve food shopping habits and accessibility.
