In this community-engaged research study from Massachusetts, community health centers worked with communities partners to increase COVID-19 testing. CHCs strengthened these partnerships through local advisory groups and community outreach communications. This study compared testing among health centers that strengthened these relationships with health centers that acted as controls and functioned as they previously had.

Members of many underserved communities have long seen worse health outcomes, and this has been exacerbated by COVID-19. This article describes certain strategies that health departments, hospitals, universities, service providers, and others have used to engage and partner with members of underserved communities. In Chicago, health departments, hospitals, service providers, and community organizations formed an alliance that met daily to coordinate services for people experiencing homelessness. The Navajo Nation partnered with health departments and hospitals to create a health command center to get aid to people, test and contact trace, and collect funding. An alliance in Albuquerque used community based participatory research (CBPR) to complete strategic planning regarding mitigating COVID-19 among people experiencing homelessness. Other cities also used CBPR or saw grassroots efforts to partner wit health departments to increase aid and funding to communities with the greatest need.

Youth nationwide face new intensified stressors like illness, death, social isolation, economic stress, food insecurity, family hardship, and increase domestic violence risk. These stressors are associated with outcomes like depression, behavioral problems, anxiety disorders, and worsened existing mental health conditions. School-based health centers (SBHCs) are a cost-effective health care delivery model that increases mental and behavioral health access and use. SBHC patients live in underserved communities and are at a greater risk for mental health issues. The qualitative data from this study highlight increased demand for mental health services and a lack of resources to meet this demand, resources to ensure universal telehealth technology access are needed to improve health care access for youth, and parental buy-in and support are crucial component of sustained care.

This study describes harm reduction and health services provided by the U.S. syringe services programs (SSPs) in 2019 and changes in provision of those services in 2020. Many SSPs that offered health services in 2019 and remained operational in 2020 increased telehealth provision of mental health and primary care services, increased MOUD provision, and expanded harm reduction services, but most SSPs reduced or stopped on-site HIV and HCV testing. With the record high opioid overdose fatality rates in 2020, sustaining the trajectory of SSP growth and innovation leading up to and through 2020 requires ensuring adequate and flexible funding to support the life-saving work of SSPs in preventing future overdose deaths and outbreaks of HIV and HCV.

In June 2020, Northwest Arkansas was a COVID-19 hotspot, with serious racial and ethnic disparities. Existing community-engaged partnerships utilized their collaborative capacity to address COVID-19 disparities in the Latinx and Pacific Islander communities. Eighteen key partners held weekly meetings and regular communication and developed four strategies: (1): health education (prevention, testing, quarantine, and follow-up care) and prevention (communication re: practices to reduce risk); (2) testing; (3) a dedicated contact tracing center with bilingual workers; (4) enhanced case management and supported quarantine.

This article describes the development, implementation, and evaluation of an online tool called RiskRadar which aims to help at-risk individuals prevent, test, and connect to care for conditions including HIV, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, and various sexually-transmitted infections. This tool helps connect individuals to the most up-to-date information available for various diseases and helps consider the individuals risk level based on reported activities.

This article details the COVID-19 testing strategy used in Worcester, Massachusetts created by the citywide Equity Task Force. The strategy was based on engaging residents to use data to identify communities impacted by COVID-19 and to develop tailored testing/education/outreach strategies. Pop-up testing sites was the main approach to testing utilized by the city. Engagement improved over the course of the implementation.

This practice traces a 14-year partnership between health institutions and a rural Native Hawaiian community. The partnership began as a single study to study familial cardiomyopathy, then evolved towards a community-based project to improve overall health and wellbeing. As time went on, other institutions and community leaders became involved. The article focuses on the growth of institutional capacity and community service. Lessons learned can serve to engage communities in COVID-19 prevention and mitigation measures.

This resources describes the creation of a culturally appropriate oral health/healthy living workshop curriculum for the Sikh American community. Community educators were Punjabi-speaking and members of the Gurdwaras ethic group, to whom the interventions were delivered. Statistically significant improvements in health behaviors were self-reported after attending the program.
