The guidance outlined in this report provides a roadmap for the ethical inclusion of pregnant women’s experiences in in the development and deployment of vaccines against emerging viruses. Recommendations include bolstering health information surveillance systems, stakeholder engagement with health care, women, families and communities, and changing the narrative about pregnancy and clinical research efforts. Recommendations require commitment of financial resources, addressing inequities in public health and whenever possible, the inclusion of perspectives of pregnant women. Lastly, the authors recommend that “When there is a limited supply of vaccine against a pathogenic threat that disproportionately affects pregnant women, their offspring, or both, or when only one vaccine among several is appropriate for use in pregnancy, then pregnant women should be among the priority groups to be offered the vaccine.” This prioritization process is key to addressing inequities and are guidance for future pandemic response efforts.

In this report, the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) discusses maternal immunizations best practices, as well as gaps to implementation recommendations. One recommendation includes focusing efforts to improve financing for immunization services during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Public health and health care partners can support efforts promoting new payment and delivery models, patient-centered medical homes, and accountable care organizations. NVAC also recommends partnering with professional organizations and other maternal immunization stakeholders to develop toolkits and guidance for improving processes.

Among groups living in vulnerable conditions, the pandemic substantially magnified the inequality gaps, with possible negative implications for these individuals’ long-term physical, socioeconomic, and mental wellbeing. The recommendations presented in this Viewpoint article have been prioritised and agreed upon by the Lancet Commission on COVID-19’s Task Force on Social Protection, Humanitarian Action, and Vulnerable Group experts. This Viewpoint lists recommendations to protect vulnerable populations and reduce health inequities: (1) execute universal health coverage and social protection systems in every country, (2) at the country-level, ensure that governments and parliaments commit to financing and safeguarding health and social services to support universalism and equity, (3) provide digital equity for all, (4) boost care economy and take immediate steps to transform the current model, (5) re-energise relationships between government and civil society actors, and ensure communities, marginalized populations, and gender identities have a central role in decision making.

The report’s authors – physicians and public health and policy experts – note massive disparities experienced by Black Americans. The worse outcomes, are a predictable result of structural and social realities. The predicates that caused these disparities have long been present. These are cycles we have to break. The report highlights areas for immediate focus and attention, and presents a set of expert-generated recommendations for action.

Recent national surveys of young people have shown alarming increases in the prevalence of certain mental health challenges. We know that mental health is shaped by many factors, from our genes and brain chemistry to our relationships with family and friends, neighborhood conditions, and larger social forces and policies. As we learn the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic, and start recovering and rebuilding, we have an opportunity. Everyone has a role to play in combating this mental health pandemic. Ensuring healthy children and families will take an all-of-society effort, including policy, institutional, and individual changes. This advisory provides actionable recommendations for young people and their families, schools and health care systems, tech and media companies, employers, community organizations and governments alike. This resource opines that health departments, which often provide health care in carceral settings or contract private organizations to provide health care, should strengthen health care services for incarcerated people. All people, regardless of whether they are incarcerated, should have immediate access to testing, care, and the ability to protect themselves from disease.

This article describes how Louisiana’s COVID-19 Health Equity Task face intends to develop a health equity dashboard to measure testing access for all communities and provide recommendations of best practices for medical organizations. Tennessee’s Department of Health and Office of Minority Health’s Health Disparity Task Force also developed three COVID-19 surveillance dashboards specifically tracking pregnancies, disparities, and cases among school-aged children.
