This guide is designed to help district leaders understand and respond to the specific teacher staffing gaps they’re facing, focusing on time-tested strategies that will make an immediate impact: ideas for covering absences, filling existing vacancies, and addressing chronic shortages exacerbated by the pandemic in key subject areas and in schools serving historically marginalized communities. This paper describes how a local public health agency joined a multi-sector community partnership made up of community-based organizations, clinical providers, and peer navigators and others with lived experience of homelessness. Together, this group created a strategic plan to lessen the impact of COVID-19 on people experiencing homelessness. They prioritized education, increased resource allocation and testing in shelters, and slated housing for those who tested positive or those at increased risk of COVID complications. Most of this work took place in shelters.

White Paper/Brief
This brief describes work to partner health departments with community organizing groups, focusing on a collaboration between Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and two community organizations. These partnerships allow health departments to actively address power imbalances that may decrease community trust in health departments. The Santa Barbara Public Health Department developed an analysis of power and worked directly with grassroots organizers. To build trust, the health department undertook many actions, including sharing organizational charts, explaining decisions, facilitating personal sharing and trust exercises, spending time together, discussing structural racism, and more. During COVID-19, these partners shared information targeted towards those with various languages and literacy levels.

This article recognizes the challenges and describes the adaptations necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the workplace. It also emphasizes employee mental health needs. A theoretical framework for organizational interventions is included that utilizes an Occupational Health Psychology approach. The proposed interventions focus on 8 key topics, such as physical health and safety, and psychological wellbeing, in addition to a tiered structure (primary, secondary, and tertiary) of proposed intervention activities that scale based on need.

Strategies are based in public, private, and multi-sector stakeholders, considering the ways that online grocery shopping and food delivery services can be utilized to support vulnerable groups.

This case study presents findings on place-based initiatives to address social determinants of health and health inequities through the Action Centers in New York City. The Action Centers, hosted by the Health Department, are a way to address community-level social determinants of health by providing low-cost office space to partner organizations and free convening space for events, meetings, and programs. This ultimately increases community members’ access to services, beyond what the Health Department or individual organizations can offer.

This case study outlines how Public Health Madison & Dane County (PHMDC) hired health equity coordinators to build capacity within PHMDC to promote racial health equity. Efforts included professional development and training among staff, strategic planning around equity, and forming a racial equity team within PHMDC.

The case study outlines how the city of King County created an interbranch team to focus on developing tools and policies to focus on equity across all government departments. The team has focused on providing trainings and assistance, helping with equity strategic planning and implementation, and training teams within each agency/department to focus on equity.

This case study outlines how the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) in Illinois partnered with community organizers on worker and immigrant rights to create a multisectoral collaborative to address root causes of health inequity called the Collaborative for Health Equity. This collaborative explicitly works to address structural racism and health inequities. It has built relationships with local social justice organizations that have helped guide CCDPH to center health equity in its strategic plans.
