The authors explored the ways Ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel learned about the pandemic and examined their COVID-19-related decision-making. Drawing on the disproportionate magnitude of COVID-19-related morbidity on Israel’s Ultra-Orthodox Jews, the authors examined their processes of COVID-19 health decision-making. Survey results show that both religious and health-related justifications were common for personal decisions, yet a disparity was found between the ways social distancing guidelines were perceived in the general education context compared to a religious context, signaling the importance for inclusive models of science communication that account for religious sensibilities and state-minority relations.

Data from the Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey (AMES) was used by CDC to assess 9th-12th grade student behaviors and experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The prevalence of poor mental health and suicidality was high across students of all sex, sexual identity, and racial and ethnic groups; however, poor mental health, persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors were less prevalent among those who felt close to persons at school and were virtually connected with others during the pandemic. The mental health of youth might be improved via strategies that improve connections with others at home, in the community, and at school.

Recent national surveys of young people have shown alarming increases in the prevalence of certain mental health challenges. We know that mental health is shaped by many factors, from our genes and brain chemistry to our relationships with family and friends, neighborhood conditions, and larger social forces and policies. As we learn the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic, and start recovering and rebuilding, we have an opportunity. Everyone has a role to play in combating this mental health pandemic. Ensuring healthy children and families will take an all-of-society effort, including policy, institutional, and individual changes. This advisory provides actionable recommendations for young people and their families, schools and health care systems, tech and media companies, employers, community organizations and governments alike. Mental health challenges are treatable and often preventable. This advisory shows how.

This resource makes recommendations related to establishing crisis stabilization systems for persons living with mental illness. This article describes how pandemic-related changes and funding increases can be leveraged to strengthen statewide crisis stabilization systems for individuals living with mental illness and substance use disorder, including recommendations for specific stakeholders to engage and action steps. The practice strategy this article is focused on is policy and organizational change to improve public health infrastructure.

This resources describes the creation of a culturally appropriate oral health/healthy living workshop curriculum for the Sikh American community. Community educators were Punjabi-speaking and members of the Gurdwaras ethic group, to whom the interventions were delivered. Statistically significant improvements in health behaviors were self-reported after attending the program.

This article describes the rapid scale-up of adolescent telehealth services at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Division of Adolescent Medicine. While the scale-up was partially effective in reaching some underserved populations (e.g., people living with HIV, people with substance use disorder, people living with mental illness), racial disparities in visit completion rates are concerning and would need to be addressed by sites replicating this intervention to avoid exacerbating health disparities. The practice strategy this article is focused on is adolescent telehealth services.

This source reviews how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected children and families, and gives recommendations on how these families and surrounding stakeholders can better support them. This includes ensuring age-appropriate information is available for parents and children, supporting childcare needs, collaborating with schools or trusted community institutions, and creating policies that support overall health, safety, and wellbeing as the pandemic continues on.

This article describes partnership and community capacity building efforts and examines community impact, defined as successful linkages to resources and changes in stress tolerance capacity among community members. Community capacity building was conceptualized as dissemination of trauma-informed education and training, community outreach and engagement, and linkage of community members to resources. Findings include: training opportunities were widespread, resource linkage type shifted from basic services and health care to food distribution, and significant improvements occurred in coping through emotional and instrumental support (did not report stress tolerance). This demonstrated the effectiveness of community-based partnerships as capacity building strategies, as partnerships had already laid the groundwork and established trust within their communities, resulting in a nimble, local response to a global crisis. The partnerships’ response to the pandemic shows how organizations that are part of a network are able to leverage resources, new ideas, and knowledge to respond to community needs.
