This study uses individual COVID-19 case and mortality data from Massachusetts combined with home address data to assess whether community-level risk factors can be identified and targeted. Results found higher COVID-19 case incidence rates for Black and Latinx residents, and stronger associations with COVID-19 mortality for those with essential worker status, older adults, and race/ethnicity status.

This resource discusses the results of the 2020 COVID-19 Resiliency Survey, which was conducted in Chicago, Illinois to gauge the impact of COVID-19 on the city during their first wave of cases. Specific focus is given to the experiences of minority groups, both racial/ethnic and sexual/gender minorities. The results show that these marginalized groups – specifically Black, Latinx, sexual minority and gender minority groups – experience more disparities in COVID-19 exposure, susceptibility, treatment access, and psychosocial effects from the pandemic. The resource offers solutions to reducing these disparities.

This systematic review examines COVID-19 literature on the association of race and ethnicity with COVID-19 outcomes. It also examines the association between race, ethnicity, COVID-19 outcomes, and socioeconomic determinants. Within these studies, it is shown that African American and Hispanic individuals are most likely to test positive, while Asian Americans have the highest risk for ICU admission and mortality rates run higher in Hispanic and Asian Americans. These results demonstrate health disparities for minority groups across various factors. Socioeconomic factors additionally are associated with worse COVID-19 outcomes.

Summary Report/Recommendations
This study uses data from the COVID Tracking Project’s Racial Data Tracker, which aggregates state-level COVID-19 reporting and tracking databases to determine racial/ethnic trends of COVID-19 incidence and evaluate the racial/ethnic distribution of COVID-19 related mortality in the US. Results found that disparities are more apparent at the county and city level, and discusses the importance of transparent, local data in order to allow for greater precision in resource allocation and effective policy changes aimed at reducing disparities. The study includes choropleth maps of the results by state.

This study conducted three different approaches to identifying disparities to the Hispanic community in Prince Williams Health District, Virginia. In June 2020, the team conducted a quantitative study of Hispanic residents, key informant interviews of local leaders, and focus group discussions with Hispanic community members to identify factors contributing to disparities. Results found that certain factors greatly impacted the Hispanic participants of this study — factors such as limited awareness of COVID-19 resources and difficulty implementing prevention practices due to work conditions and large household numbers.

This study conducted a county-level analysis of Texas in 2020, looking at COVID-19 cases and mortality rates. The results indicated a decrease in mortality rates in counties with more primary care physicians per capita, and an increase in mortality rates in counties with a 1% increase in the proportion of Hispanic and African American individuals per capita.

This study analyzes mortality death rates in the state of Connecticut to determine the number of excess non-COVID-19 deaths for Black and Latino residents, as compared to White residents. The results demonstrate an excess in deaths in both Black and Latino communities.

Researchers from the University of Tennessee conducted this study to illuminate the associations between social determinant of health outcome factors and pandemic health outcomes. This was achieved by created the Urban Public Health Observatory (UPHO) model, which sought to provide real-time analysis of mid-sized U.S. metropolitan areas in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

This study analyzes CDC data to show the differential impact of COVID-19 on Hispanic individuals. They conducted a multivariate Poisson regression to assess the risk of hospitalization and death in Hispanic White (HW), Hispanic Black (HB), and Hispanic Multiracial/Other (HM) groups compared to non-Hispanic whites (NHW). Hispanic individuals have an increased risk of requiring mechanical ventilation and ICU admission, as compared to White individuals.
