This article presents a systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence of postpartum depression and to summarize risk factors for postpartum depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of eight studies during the COVID-19 pandemic were included, and most studies were conducted in developed countries. The research findings indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic could detrimentally impact maternal mental well-being among women after childbirth. Investigating the prevalence and risk factors of postpartum depression among women could shed some light on their mental and emotional states; so that support measures and tailored interventions from health professionals and policymakers could be offered to improve maternal and infant outcomes, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This article summarizes the findings from a systematic review of the safety, immunogenicity, and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in pregnancy and lactation. In total, 23 studies were identified. The systematic review found that COVID-19 vaccines are safe, immunogenic, and effective during pregnancy and lactation.

This article discusses the findings from a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies on pregnant women with confirmed COVID-19 infections. More than 31,000 pregnant women from 62 studies were included.

This study looks at a COVID-19 outbreak among a multi-residential home for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Arizona to determine how COVID-19 was spread. Epidemiologic and genomic evidence show that spread likely occurred from asymptomatically infected staff. This study demonstrates the need for public health measures and rapid genomic analysis to shape policies that protect these vulnerable populations.

Peer Review Study
This is a qualitative study that looked at 25 women who were recently released from jail to ascertain reasons behind vaccine hesitancy and COVID-19 mitigation strategies for this sub-population. Results show that most participants had a great deal of vaccination mistrust and low health literacy rates, despite the fact that most of the participants were more susceptible to contracting COVID-19. The article discusses the importance of interventions to target these populations.

This article details a year-long, longitudinal cohort study of individuals with schizophrenia to examine COVID-19 hospitalization, mortality, vaccination, and postvaccination infection rates. Results show that individuals with schizophrenia are at an increased risk of hospitalization and mortality and have lower rates of vaccination than the general population. Medical comorbidities also play a significant role in worsening outcomes and mortality for this sub-population.

This study looked at vaccine hesitancy among a survey sample of 1,200 Black and White participants from December to June 2021. In the initial months of the study, vaccine hesitancy was comparable among Black and White participants, but Black participants became more willing to be vaccinated for protection by March 2021, whereas the White participant baseline for vaccine acceptance remained the same.

This study examined the sociodemographic characteristics of the residents of Cameron County, Texas, one of the most Hispanic-populated counties in the United States with over 90% of residents identifying as Hispanic. The study analyzed data from March to December 2020, and studied both social determinants of health and COVID-19 mitigation policies, such as the “shelter in place” mandate. The results show that single parents, those living below the poverty level, and those who do not fluently speak English are at a more increased risk of contracting COVID-19. The shelter in place mandate was able to reduce community transmission within three weeks of implementation, but the results of its impact vary greatly by age, sex, and race.

This study sought to assess the correlation between population and spatial characteristics of COVID-19 by examining positive COVID-19 data from New York City with ZIP Code Tabulation Areas to determine what social determinants of health increase an individual’s risk of contracting COVID-19. Results showed that neighborhoods with larger proportions of Black people, people older than 65, people with heart disease, and people living in densely populated housing are at higher risk of contracting COVID-19.

This study highlights the geographic differences in COVID-19 positivity rates within Los Angeles county, taking into consideration other socio-structural determinants that impact these rates. The data — testing data from the LAC Department of Public Health and American Community Survey data — was analyzed and mapped to include testing rates, race/ethnicity, poverty, insurance status, education, and population/household density. Results found higher COVID-19 positivity rates in communities with higher proportions of Latinx residents, those living below the federal poverty line, and those with high household densities.
