Using a grant from the National Science Foundation, Predictive Intelligence for Pandemic Prevention (PIPP) developed tools and systems to respond effectively to infectious disease pandemics. Recommendations from this work include avoiding reinvention of the wheel by centralizing and standardizing approaches to pandemic response planning, collaboration and information sharing among public health stakeholders, investing in high-performance computing and data management systems for public health, creating a national center for pandemic response, developing playbooks for fast-moving threats, and identifying sustainable and scalable solutions.

Director of the Health Equity Core at Harvard Medical School, Professor Sprague Martinez has organized a team of partners to identify the impact of long COVID on Black and Latinx communities in Massachusetts and barriers they experience in accessing treatment. The project is part of the Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness, which aims to address the challenges of COVID-19 and future pandemics. This article discusses the Foundation for Opioid Response Efforts (FORE) distribution of $1.3 million in grants to organizations studying the potential permanent adoption of COVID-19 care access measures to promote health equity in opioid use disorder treatment. The grants aim to investigate the impact of temporary policies, such as virtual care, on access to care and patient outcomes. The studies will explore how relaxed prescribing policies for buprenorphine, telehealth strategies, and other COVID-19 measures have affected patient access and outcomes, particularly among underserved populations. This article identifies four key steps to preparing for the next the next public health emergency. First, public health must invest in a modernized data infrastructure that connects health and public health systems. Second, the contact tracing and disease investigation specialist workforce should be expanded, and processes set up to grow this workforce quickly during times of acute crisis. Third, better contact tracing policies should be put into place prior outbreaks to support public health systems’ ability to respond effectively. And finally, increase public awareness of and trust in their local public health infrastructure.

Systematic Review/Meta-Analysis
This analysis explores regional variation in COVID-19 death rates across America. It unpacks the “two Americas” narrative of some parts of the country having high demand for vaccines and others having widespread vaccine hesitancy, and shows that a divide between rates of exceeds death existed prior to the introduction in vaccines. This difference is likely due to a difference in mask use, social distancing, and other behaviors. Results underscore the importance of excess mortality measures such as wastewater testing to get a more accurate picture.

Systematic Review/Meta-Analysis
This article details a systematic review of current literature sources to identify how the Latinx community experiences disparities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The review found literature using population data that showed policies impacting access to health insurance, health care, sick leave, childcare, and historic wage disparities remain consequential in perpetuating existing disparities. A review of the results of all studies selected for the review is available within the article.

An early report issued by the CDC identified staff members working in multiple nursing homes as a likely source of spread of COVID-19. The authors performed the first large-scale analysis of nursing home connections via shared staff and contractors. Using a large-scale analysis of smartphone location data, they found that 49 percent of COVID-19 cases among nursing home residents was attributable to staff movement between facilities. Traditional federal regulatory metrics of nursing home quality were unimportant in predicting outbreaks. The results provide evidence for a policy recommendation of compensating nursing home workers to work at only one home and limit cross-traffic across homes.
