A large school district in Cincinnati partnered with their local health department and children’s hospital to develop mitigation procedures as children returned to school. These mitigation procedures successfully limited school-based spread of COVID-19 by combining best practices in rapid testing, contact tracing, and early isolation. Procedures were regularly revisited and updated in an iterative process to respond to new information and circumstances.

This article describes the rapid statewide COVID-19 vaccination strategy implemented by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. The strategy focused on equitable distribution and reaching hard to reach populations, including racial and ethnic minority groups and rural communities.

To help policymakers and other stakeholders identify opportunities to improve health equity in their states, SHADAC has produced a set of data resources for the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Survey — combining the three most recent years of data (2018–2020) to improve our ability to develop reliable state-level estimates for smaller population subgroups — SHADAC created maps and charts showing how states compare to the U.S. average in measures of people’s self-reported physical and mental health, and how people’s physical and mental health varies depending on their race and ethnicity, level of income, and age within each state.

During the pandemic, the Minnesota Department of Health created three new teams focused on an equitable COVID-19 response. These teams included the Cultural, Faith, and Disability Communities Branch; the Tribal COVID-19 Healthcare Team; and the Vaccine Equity Branch. These teams created partnerships with community partners, elevated community voices, set equity goals and metrics, and respected tribal sovereignty in their COVID-19 response. This helped to ensure resources were used equitably and that COVID-19 responses were effective within diverse communities.

This article summarizes COVID-19 mitigation within the Blackfeet Tribal Reservation and changes in incidence depending on the enforcement of masking, stay-at-home orders, and contact tracing. The combination of these efforts was associated with a 33-fold reduction in COVID-19 incidence from October 5 to November 7 in 2020.

This resource discusses public transportation as a strategy to reduce healthy inequity. This policy brief details how public transportation options can improve health and health equity by reducing traffic crashes and air pollution, increasing physical activity, and improving access to medical care, healthy food, vital services, employment, and social connection. This article describes the multi-pronged approach taken by the Klamath tribes to address COVID-19 across multiple tribal communities. An Emergency Preparedness Incident Management Team (IMT) managed the response by implementing outreach, wrap-around services (groceries, residential, medicine, etc.), tribal policies, and testing protocols. Between March to September 2020, no deaths were reported (unlike the county overall) and 12% of tribal members were tested.

The article presents a mental health intervention for LGBTQ+ youth delivered by telehealth. This article describes the application of a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach through an online telehealth program called AFFIRM. The affirm approach covered 8 group sessions focusing on youth LGBTQ+ populations and included a brief case study highlighting the approach and feedback from one individual. Though the case study discussed in this article is brief, the Affirmative CBT model has been addressed in other studies and was found to reduce depression, mental health risks, and increase coping skills.The intervention may be useful to bridge access gaps presented by COVID-19.
