SEACMA is a trusted local partner and hub for refugees, underserved individuals, and residents of all backgrounds. The review concludes with the overarching recommendation of engaging and empowering immigrant communities. The Rebuilding Neighborhoods Initiative convened community organizers, small business owners, and corporations in the technology and innovation sector to develop community-centered, implementable solutions addressing gentrification and the lack of affordable housing in three greater Boston neighborhoods. Six monthly meetings were held on topics related to affordable housing. Each neighborhood had a team of 5-6 individuals who were developing and committing to shared goals towards equitable development.

Case Study
A smoking cessation intervention that aimed to utilize peer/family networks to support Chinese and Vietnamese American male smokers. Health workers identifying as Chinese or Vietnamese were trained to deliver the intervention to individual smoker-family dyads, doing their own outreach and tobacco education while encouraging dyads to set their own unique goals. The intervention was successful, increasing smokers’ utilization of any cessation resources from 2.1% at the start of the study to 60.4% in 3 months. Similar models can be used an adapted to increase COVID-19 vaccination uptake and adoption of COVID-19 mitigation strategies.

This case study outlines how the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) in Illinois partnered with community organizers on worker and immigrant rights to create a multisectoral collaborative to address root causes of health inequity called the Collaborative for Health Equity. This collaborative explicitly works to address structural racism and health inequities. It has built relationships with local social justice organizations that have helped guide CCDPH to center health equity in its strategic plans.

The authors conducted a systematic review to understand disparities in H1N1 vaccine uptake by race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, rural/urban residence, population density, and disability status, and factors associated with unequal uptake, as well as the benefits and harms of interventions designed to attenuate inequities in H1N1 vaccine uptake—in an effort to address potential disparities in COVID-19 vaccine access and uptake.
