Peer Review Study
This article details the work of the Asian Health Services (AHS), a Federally Qualified Health Center located in Alameda County, California. In May 2020, AHS sought to document the experiences and needs of the Asian American community they serve through a cross-sectional survey. The surveys were available in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, traditional Chinese, and Korean. Results display the diverse needs of the Asian American community, including issues with access to testing, anti-Asian discrimination, and language barriers offer several barriers to this community. To help policymakers and other stakeholders identify opportunities to improve health equity in their states, SHADAC has produced a set of data resources for the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Survey — combining the three most recent years of data (2018–2020) to improve our ability to develop reliable state-level estimates for smaller population subgroups — SHADAC created maps and charts showing how states compare to the U.S. average in measures of people’s self-reported physical and mental health, and how people’s physical and mental health varies depending on their race and ethnicity, level of income, and age within each state.

Report describing Anti-Asian racism during COVID-19 in California. This research report presents the results of interviews conducted with 20 individuals from Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities in California. These interviews discussed perceived causes of anti-Asian racism, the impact on the community, and suggested or existing mitigating strategies. These interviews highlighted the connection to the COVID-19 pandemic and the underlying and systemic causes of racism. Mitigating strategies included education about the AAPI community, improved reporting systems, and promoting policy changes to address root causes of racism.

This report examines decarceration as a public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. People in correctional facilities are more susceptible to COVID-19 for a wide variety of reasons, including overcrowding and higher rates of pre-existing conditions. Public health agencies can advocate for these decarceration policies or participate directly in discharge planning or health care provision to these vulnerable populations.

This framework focuses on strategies and action steps recommended for health departments to enhance access to testing, quality care, and prevention methods in correctional/incarceration facilities. This resource opines that health departments, which often provide health care in carceral settings or contract private organizations to provide health care, should strengthen health care services for incarcerated people. All people, regardless of whether they are incarcerated, should have immediate access to testing, care, and the ability to protect themselves from disease.
