This case study of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System highlights effective practices for increasing vaccine uptake among vulnerable populations of veterans. This included targeting outreach to people based on race/ethnicity and the presence of risk factors for severe COVID-19 disease. The VA Puget Sound Health Care System used multiple modalities of communications and collaborated with community leaders in order to increase vaccine rates among people in underserved areas.

Practice strategy involves including unhoused peer ambassadors in outreach plans to encourage vaccination against Covid-19 in homeless encampments/shelters. Peer ambassadors were found to be effective in promoting vaccination among their peers. However, some concerns existed around the ethics of exploiting the trust unhoused PAs had with their communities, as well as apathy and frustration towards the academic and bureaucratic nature of the research study.

This article details the Project HAPPY (HIV/AIDS Prevention Project for Youth) and how it engaged Black/African-American youth through research and implementation of the project. Youth were a part of expert panel that reviewed proposed HIV/AIDS curricula. and did outreach to get youth enrolled in the program. They recruited 431 teens and enrolled 57%, with 72% of enrolled youth attending all sessions.

This article summarizes COVID-19 mitigation within the Blackfeet Tribal Reservation and changes in incidence depending on the enforcement of masking, stay-at-home orders, and contact tracing. The combination of these efforts was associated with a 33-fold reduction in COVID-19 incidence from October 5 to November 7 in 2020.

This article describes the multi-pronged approach taken by the Klamath tribes to address COVID-19 across multiple tribal communities. An Emergency Preparedness Incident Management Team (IMT) managed the response by implementing outreach, wrap-around services (groceries, residential, medicine, etc.), tribal policies, and testing protocols. Between March to September 2020, no deaths were reported (unlike the county overall) and 12% of tribal members were tested.

For example, individuals may need additional support to shop online for food or connect with organizations for food access. In addition, access to COVID-19 information may be difficult to access if websites are not 508 compliant, and a lack of internet access can compound challenges. Finally, some case studies are included for how communities responded to these challenges.

It is a collection of key findings and considerations by FEMA for jurisdictions and communities regarding ongoing COVID-19 pandemic operations. The Rebuilding Neighborhoods Initiative convened community organizers, small business owners, and corporations in the technology and innovation sector to develop community-centered, implementable solutions addressing gentrification and the lack of affordable housing in three greater Boston neighborhoods. Six monthly meetings were held on topics related to affordable housing. Each neighborhood had a team of 5-6 individuals who were developing and committing to shared goals towards equitable development.

This article summarizes the lessons learned from implementing telehealth in rural environments over the past 3 years and how to expand these efforts in the context of COVID-19. The needs of elderly populations in rural environments are also addressed.
