In this article researchers in Santa Clara, California, developed and tested a computer algorithm to predict language needs when performing contract tracing in the community. Census data and mortgage data was used to build the model, which was evaluated using a randomized control trial design, and surveys were administered to the contract tracing staff to learn about their experiences with language discordance. Results indicate that the intervention decreased the amount of time between when the case is opened and when the interview with the individual is conducted.

(2) Delayed: Education, testing, isolation
(3) Surge: Activation of a “drop team”” of health care professionals during an outbreak

This commentary article summarizes community-academic partnerships and how they can be used to address vaccine hesitancy among Black and Hispanic/Latinx communities. The authors conclude that pro-vaccine interventions need to: (1) be empathetic to the fears of participants, (2) make a personal connection (e.g., appropriate self-disclosure), (3) deliver accurate information in a non-confrontational manner, and (4) avoid belaboring historical maltreatment and unsupported conspiracies. Moreover, healthcare institutions need to collaborate with community stakeholders to increase access to vulnerable populations and rebuild trust prior to offering interventions.

This article describes a stakeholder approach for implementing, evaluating, and sharing lessons learned from COVID-19 Conversations, a program developed and delivered virtually by researchers and academics at Northwell Health in Manhasset, NY. The program’s goal was to address the mental, physical, and psychosocial needs of community members. The program used Zoom/ Facebook Live to deliver 15- interactive discussions on topics ranging from health education on COVID-19 and mental health to resources for unmet social needs. Priority areas for discussion were based on responses from surveys distributed through their community networks. A total of 151 individuals completed the survey and identified priority areas for discussion. This interprofessional, cross-sector collaboration highlights the importance of public health interventions to reduce the spread of COVID-19 through easy online access and culturally relevant community education and outreach.

This article discusses a promotora-led intervention designed to provide support for invidividuals with behavioral health needs and with connection to supports to address the social determinants of health. The program was being implemented prior to the onset of COVID-19, but compares usage and need by analyzing the data pre- and post-COVID-19. Service usage and needs such as access to food, housing, and financial assistance were noted trends post-pandemic.

This paper highlights the lessons learned through a qualitative study involving 72 Black and Latinx focus group participants who were asked about barriers and challenges related to the COVID-19 vaccine. Qualitative results discuss nuances of historical medical mistreatment of this community, perceptions of vaccine messaging and trusted health messengers in the community, and addressing barriers to vaccine access.

This article compared community health workers (CHWs) in Indiana and Texas based on the results of two research studies in order to 1) investigate the unique role of CHWs and their Spanish-speaking counterparts, promotores de salud, in rural communities and 2) understand how their advocacy efforts represent a central form of caregiving. An analysis was done of how CHWs connect structurally vulnerable clients in rural areas to resources, health education, and health and social services. CHWs and promotores de salud have acted as first responders to the needs of marginalized rural populations, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to health education and translation work, CHWs also play an important role in advocacy, bridging the gap between clients and community leaders. While informing clients of available resources, they empower the clients to advocate for their own needs in different settings. CHWs also have the ability to engage with stakeholders and policy makers in better addressing client needs.

This article describes the approach and impact of the Stanford Flu Crew, a service learning program at Stanford University School of Medicine, where pre-clinical students provide vaccines to underserved populations in community settings. The article includes information on both program outcomes (i.e., the number of people vaccinated per year over a 4-year period) and student perceptions of learning outcomes achieved through this program.
