This analysis summarizes responses from the 2021 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey to gain insight into governmental public health workers’ needs and experiences. Public health workers continue to be on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic and recruiting and retaining workers is an important element of an effective emergency response. Pride in public health and teamwork were identified as positive aspects of the job, while burnout and unappreciation were cited as negative aspects.

Challenges related to workforce capacity have existed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. These shortages are especially acute and problematic for settings with high disease burdens such as nursing facilities. Strategies for expanding public health capacity within nursing homes and more broadly include increased training and retention of experienced staff.

This research paper discusses various public health agency websites and official government websites in countries with more than 5,000 confirmed COVID cases. The researchers used various methods to determine the readability level of the websites. The researchers found that official COVID information put out by states often exceeded the recommended reading level, while federal information was found to be much more readable, most likely due to federal mandates for readability. Recommendations are to use plain-language COVID resources to be more accessible to all audiences.

This brief lists interventions to support state public health efforts to address rural disparities and racial discrimination. It emphasizes the importance of localized data on social determinants of health and improving systemic and structural underpinnings of racial disparities. The Cuyahoga County Board of Health partnered with congregate living facilities to try to prevent and mitigate Covid outbreaks. The Board partnered with community partners, facility staff, state health officials, and other health care professionals and organized structured team meetings to identify and respond to cases in congregate living facilities. This partnership worked together to plan testing, contract tracing, and isolation/quarantine protocols. The department also hired a resource manager who coordinated all response efforts. For high need congregate living facilities, the resource manager/partners assisted with PPE needs.

Case Study
This article describes how one county’s health department partnered with emergency services to form a strike team focused on mitigating COVID-19 outbreaks in congregate living facilities. The team helped create more cohesive communication between these facilities and between facilities and the health department. This strike team identified these facilities through partnerships with community organizations. The strike team conducted wellness checks, provided PPE education, and helped facilities secure PPE. In facilities with potential outbreaks, the team provided early testing and quick isolation.

Case Study
This case study outlines how the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) incorporated health equity capacity into their collaborative work with community partners (the case study refers to this as a “public health cloud”). To do so, MCDPH created internal trainings, hired consultants to provide recommendations in strategic planning, and created a health equity cloud to connect staff directly to underserved communities in order to improve internal practices.

Case Study
The case study describes how the New York City Department of Health created a Race to Justice Core Team to advance racial equity within the department, with a specific focus on coordinated policies and workplans across all of the department’s divisions and staff. The team has focused on training staff and on creating workplans that address bias in hiring, contracting, and policies.
