The Community Outreach Specialist (COS) program aimed to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake among rural communities through targeted outreach efforts. The program trained and deployed community outreach specialists who engaged with community members, provided education about COVID-19 and vaccination, addressed concerns and misconceptions, and facilitated access to vaccination services. The COS program in reaching and engaging with socially vulnerable and medically underserved populations, successfully increasing vaccine acceptance and uptake in these communities by building trust, addressing barriers to vaccination, and tailoring outreach strategies to the local context. The article discusses the importance of community-based approaches, cultural competency, and collaboration with local organizations and leaders in achieving successful vaccine outreach. It also emphasizes the need for sustained efforts to ensure equitable access to vaccination and to address disparities in vaccine uptake among different populations.

Peer Review Study
This article conducts a retrospective case-control study of electronic health records of individuals who were diagnosed with COVID-19 and have a recent diagnosis of substance use disorder (SUD). The results show that those diagnosed with SUD, particularly African Americans and those with opioid use disorder (OUD), are more likely to contract COVID-19, as well as suffer worsening outcomes such as hospitalization and mortality due to COVID-19. This article shows that an increase in SUD screening could be a factor in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 in this community.

Peer Review Study
This resource discusses the results of the 2020 COVID-19 Resiliency Survey, which was conducted in Chicago, Illinois to gauge the impact of COVID-19 on the city during their first wave of cases. Specific focus is given to the experiences of minority groups, both racial/ethnic and sexual/gender minorities. The results show that these marginalized groups – specifically Black, Latinx, sexual minority and gender minority groups – experience more disparities in COVID-19 exposure, susceptibility, treatment access, and psychosocial effects from the pandemic. The resource offers solutions to reducing these disparities.

Summary Report/Recommendations
This report recommends that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) adopt new practices for collecting data on sex, gender, and sexual orientation — including collecting gender data by default, and not conflating gender with sex as a biological variable. The report recommends standardized language to be used in survey questions that ask about a respondent’s sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation. Better measurements will improve data quality, as well as the NIH’s ability to identify LGBTQI+ populations and understand the challenges they face.

Peer Review Study
This study seeks to examine the impact of incarceration on the health of sexual and gender minority populations using publicly accessible, representative health datasets from 2010 to 2020. The study reveals a lack of diverse gender minority data that could address how this population is impacted on large levels.

Summary Report/Recommendations
This article provides insight and recommendations into how providers and healthcare systems can address the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on sexual and gender minority groups by ensuring equitable treatment. Sexual and gender minority populations are an underserved and marginalized demographic that could be affected disproportionately by the social, psychological, financial, physiological, and mental health impacts of COVID-19. The authors provide steps for equitable treatment by healthcare staff, which include: (1) maintain and increase cultural responsiveness training and preparedness for SGM populations, (2) increase use of sexual orientation and gender identity measures in surveillance, (3) conduct research on the impacts of COVID-19 on SGM populations, and (4) include equity-focused initiatives in disaster preparedness plans. These actions toward equity would begin to allow for our current health system to care more appropriately for SGM populations.

Peer Review Study
The objectives of the study were to describe patterns of COVID-19 testing among LGBTQ+ people and to differentiate rates of COVID-19 testing and test results by sociodemographic characteristics. Participants completed an internet-based survey from May through July 2020 that assessed COVID-19 testing and test results and sociodemographic characteristics. Data were analyzed on receipt and results of PCR and antibody testing for COVID-19 in relation to sociodemographic characteristics. The study confirms the need to create COVID-19 public health messaging and programming that attend to LGBTQ+ populations.

White Paper/Brief
The paper outlines the work of the Gender Harmony Project, which has developed a gender-inclusive Health Level Seven International (HL7) logical model: the HL7 Gender Harmony Model. The Gender Harmony Model is a logical model that provides a standardized approach that is both backwards-compatible and an improvement to the meaningful capture of gender identity, recorded sex or recorded gender, sex for clinical use, the name to use, and pronouns that are affirmative and inclusive of gender-marginalized people. The Gender Harmony Project was formed to create more inclusive health information exchange standards to enable a safer, higher-quality, and embracing healthcare experience. The Gender Harmony Model provides the informative guidance for standards for developers to implement a more thorough technical design that improves the narrow binary design used in many legacy clinical systems.
