Blog
This blog discusses incarceration as a structural determinant of individual health that also worsens population health and the need to understand the reach of mass incarceration through better measurement. The authors provide recommendations as how to improve data reporting on carceral populations.

Peer Review Study
This study examines the challenges of using community-based participatory research (CBPR) approaches during the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 brings unique challenges to this approach due to social distancing and the closure of key community organizations. They identify three key challenges: flexibility to pivot when needed, inequity in research participation, and the well-being of the research team. The study focuses on impacts for immigrant and communities of color and examines intersectionality’s with age and gender.

Data Collection Tool
This special edition data tool provides important information related to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as data regarding where populations vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic reside, where the cases are surging, and which communities will require greater hospital capacity for severe COVID-19. The data can be used for data collection and analysis.

The Mapping Medicare Disparities (MMD) Population View provides a user-friendly way to explore and better understand disparities in chronic diseases, and allows users to: (1) visualize health outcome measures at a national, state, or county level; (2) explore health outcome measures by age, sex, race and ethnicity; (3) compare differences between two geographic locations (e.g., benchmark against the national average); and (4) compare differences between two racial and ethnic groups within the same geographic area.

Peer Review Study
This study looks at internet usage of older adults through the California Health Interview Survey to examine how social determinants of health and socioeconomic levels can impact access to health information. Results found that minorities with lower levels of socioeconomic status are most impacted by a digital divide and access to health information via the internet.

Peer Review Study
The authors investigated data sources to determine whether short-term jailing of individuals prior to release may drive COVID-19 spread.

Peer Review Study
Using jail population data, county-level aggregate data, and policy intervention data, this study examines the association of jail decarceration and anticontagion policies with COVID-19 rates. This study adds a unique contribution to the discussion of incarceration and disease spreading, as it is the first to examine the effects of decarceration on population-level community health outcomes. The authors compare anticontagion policies within jails throughout the United States to other community policy interventions such as stay-at-home orders, nursing home visitation bans, school closures, and mask mandates. Additionally, the study analyzes four demographic subsets including income, population density, and median proportion of populations identifying as Black. The results showed that an 80% reduction in jail incarcerations would decrease disease spreading in both the prison system and the community, and was more effective than any other community policy intervention.
