This report examines decarceration as a public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. People in correctional facilities are more susceptible to COVID-19 for a wide variety of reasons, including overcrowding and higher rates of pre-existing conditions. Public health agencies can advocate for these decarceration policies or participate directly in discharge planning or health care provision to these vulnerable populations.

This study looks at county-level socioeconomic health factors with demographic data to examine COVID-19 incidence and mortality from January to July 2020. The results showed that a wide number of social determinants, including household composition, minority status, and environmental factors, significantly impact health disparities for minority populations.

This case study describes the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s (CDPHE) work to change the narrative and framing of population health data to emphasize the importance of structural inequities and social determinants of health. This study examined racial/ethnic disparities, exposure risks, testing rates, positive tests, and case rates for California residents from March to October 2020 to identify racial/ethnic groups with high-risk households. The study finds that Latinos are disproportionately affected, being approximately 8 times more likely to live in a high-risk household than other racial/ethnic groups

This study examines the relationships between neighborhood police stop-and-frisk encounters and both health outcomes and violence rates in New Orleans, in an ecological, cross-sectional study using local police report data, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, and US Census data.

This article analyzes county-level data for vaccination rates and social determinants of health factors for Tennessee between February and May 2021. The machine learning model was able to predict COVID-19 incidence, as well as detect rates of disparities for social determinants such as transportation and access to health care.
