White Paper/Brief
This article details the adaptation of the 2020 Community Health Survey by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in order to capture the impact of COVID-19 on physical health, mental health, and social determinants of health. It explains how the survey questions were adapted, how collection of survey data was adapted, and how a serosurvey was implemented. Two new polls were added, Healthy NYC and 7 Health Opinion Poll, to learn about COVID-19 related opinions, attitudes, and knowledge.

Using jail population data, county-level aggregate data, and policy intervention data, this study examines the association of jail decarceration and anticontagion policies with COVID-19 rates. This study adds a unique contribution to the discussion of incarceration and disease spreading, as it is the first to examine the effects of decarceration on population-level community health outcomes. The authors compare anticontagion policies within jails throughout the United States to other community policy interventions such as stay-at-home orders, nursing home visitation bans, school closures, and mask mandates. Additionally, the study analyzes four demographic subsets including income, population density, and median proportion of populations identifying as Black. The results showed that an 80% reduction in jail incarcerations would decrease disease spreading in both the prison system and the community, and was more effective than any other community policy intervention.

Peer Review Study
The study analyzed data from different sources to estimate the racial and ethnic diversity of the current healthcare workforce and the graduate pipeline for healthcare professions, and to evaluate whether the diversity of the pipeline suggests greater representation of Black, Hispanic, and Native American populations in the future.

Peer Review Study
The study explores where and how Black women are obtaining information that pertains to COVID-19, along with the impacts that COVID-19 may be having on their daily lives. A codebook was developed based on the recorded interviews, which included deductive and inductive codes. A thematic analysis of the data was then conducted using MaxQDA (Verbi Software), focusing on Black women’s experiences related to COVID-19. The majority of participants were using a combination of social media platforms and news sources to obtain information about COVID-19.

Peer Review Study
This study used a randomized controlled trial to determine whether physician-delivered prevention messages affect knowledge and information-seeking behavior of Black and Latinx individuals and whether this differs according to the race and ethnicity of the physician and tailored content. Participants viewed video messages regarding COVID-19 that varied by physician race and ethnicity, acknowledgment of racism and inequality, and community perceptions of mask wearing.

Peer Review Study
This article outlines a framework for data collection among communities of color based on a project by local organizations in Canada. The authors also discuss their encounter with data gaps and provide recommendations and strategies for policymakers and community/health stakeholders on how to improve, use, and analyze disaggregated data. As part of the Strengthening Disaggregated Sociodemographic Data Related to COVID-19 project with the Ottawa Local Immigration Partnership (OLIP) and the University of Ottawa, a framework for guiding equitable data collection and use was created.

White Paper/Brief
This paper serves as a foundational look into how structural racism and social determinants of health impact communities of color — particularly Black and Latino communities — in Massachusetts. This document uses local Massachusetts and national data sources to examine multiple factors for health inequities among racial minorities within the state. The primer covers demographic profiles, social drivers of health, access to coverage and care, service utilization, health outcomes, and the disparate impact of COVID-19 with infographics across multiple areas of health.
