Summary Report/Recommendations
The authors identify strategies and approaches for creating culturally resonant health promotion interventions in partnership with Native communities, drawing on lessons learned from five community-based Native health intervention studies. The practice strategy this article is focused on is community-based, culturally resonant health promotion. Adaption of these strategies will be required for interventions specific to COVID-19 mitigation.

Case Study
The Packed Promise intervention sent monthly food boxes and food vouchers to families with children eligible for free school meals in Chickasaw Nation territory in rural Oklahoma. The deliveries themselves were successful and led to modest improvements in children’s fruit, vegetable, and whole-grain consumption, but the intervention did not result in statistically significant reductions in children’s food insecurity. Adult food insecurity was reduced initially, but the reduction was not sustained after 18 months. 2 articles were written to assess Packed Promise’s impacts on food insecurity (Briefel et al.) and fruit/veg consumption (Cabili et al.).

In response to the pandemic the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health Great Lakes Hub coordinated with community members to identify contents to be collected and distributed in the form of a care box to members in the local Indigenous community. These boxes contained items intended to connect to cultural resilience for adults and children, such as sage, essential oil, written wisdom from elders, cultural food and recipes, and children’s storybooks. This study recommends that governments should continue to fund and prioritize use of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) as major vaccine administration sites. This retrospective cohort study examines COVID-19 vaccination administration rates at FQHCs by race and ethnicity and also the racial and ethnic equity in vaccine receipt at FQHCs. The results of the study found that vaccine administration at FQHCs was equitable for American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, and Hispanic populations, but there were inequities for the Black population. FQHCs have provided critical access to COVID-19 vaccinations for patients from diverse racial and ethnic groups. This resource may help motivate governments to continue funding and prioritizing the use of FQHCs by showing that these health centers have provided access to COVID-19 vaccinations for patients from diverse economic, racial, and ethnic groups.

This article outlines the strategies the Hopi Tribe in Northeastern Arizona took to address the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on their population of 7,500 Hopi individuals. Activities were developed in partnership with the local health center and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The article presents strategies of how Durham County Department of Public Health operationalized equity into multiple phases of its COVID-19 response through infrastructure changes and how to apply these methods to future public health emergencies to better serve vulnerable populations. This response relied upon robust data collection of demographic data to identify inequities. Infrastructure changes included standing up multiple COVID-19 Task Forces (Homeless, Community, Food Security, African American) and Strike Teams (Long-Term Care Facility, Clusters) targeting vulnerable populations; placing testing sites in targeted locations; collaborating with multisector and community partners for feedback; and providing Health Ambassadors for in-person dissemination of COVID-19 information. The paper reviews results from these interventions and lessons learned.
